Restaurant du Lac — Restaurant in Beau Vallon

If I could give 0 stars, I would. This was, hands down, the worst dining experience we’ve had in Mauritius.

We chose Restaurant du Lac in Pointe Jerome after seeing 890+ reviews and a seemingly promising 4.4-star rating on Google. Safe to say — I have no idea how it got there.

From the moment we sat down, the “friendly” owner swooped in — Not to welcome us, but to push specific (and overpriced) menu items onto us. Feeling pressured, we went with his recommendations: 10 mussels (1600 MUR), 4 king prawns (1600 MUR), and a fish (1000 MUR).

Big mistake. • The mussels? Tasted like they had been soaking in dirty ocean water — Definitely not fresh. • The fish? Dry and questionable how long it’s been in the fridge. • The sauce? A heavy-handed mess of oyster sauce and garlic — Salty, lazy, and amateurish at best.

Now, I understand local cuisine can sometimes differ from what tourists are used to. But bad ingredients are bad ingredients — and no amount of “local flavor” can mask seafood that is clearly not fresh. The audacity to charge premium prices for subpar food is disgusting.

As if the food wasn’t bad enough, things got even worse when we tried to pay. When our Apple Pay didn’t work (after two attempts), the owner’s mask slipped. The “friendly” act evaporated — replaced with rude, impatient remarks like:

“You’re wasting my time, I have customers to attend to.” (There was one other table.)

We scraped together payment via cash and our alternative card just to get out of there as fast as we could, feeling both ripped off and insulted.

Bottom line: • Overpriced. • Awful food. • Aggressive upselling. • Zero respect for customers.

Do yourself a favor: AVOID Restaurant du Lac at all costs. If you do end up there (despite this warning), stand your ground — don’t let the owner pressure you into ordering whatever lines his pockets.

There are far better places in Mauritius that actually care about what they serve — and how they treat the people they serve it to. Shame on you, Restaurant du Lac....

Make sure you check the price on everything you order. The food was OK, not the best or the worse . I don't know we're he got his previous review or maybe ir was a different owner, the amount of food we got for the price we paid . 1* grilled fish , 3 tiger prawns ,crab soup ( which was bland a very disappointing,it was a small crab with NO meat !!) I complained about it and the cook just brushed it off . We had octopus salad which was soggy and the octopus tasted awful. The fish was cooked well and the tiger prawns was tasty. But the bill at the end considering we don't drink was way to much for what we had ,even dining back home in an expensive resturant would have never came to this amount . Our overall impression as we were the only people there for several hours , waiter was charming and accommodating , fish, prawns was average but small apart from the salad and soup that was very poor .Price .... So Expensive for what you get ,much better resturant in that area that we would rate . We made sure we told the waiter we left him a good tip when we paid the bill ,but I beleive the owner kept it . The waiter was not the problem, he works hard, the quality of the food and price made us feel our first night on this beautiful island disappointing . Always check the bill and ask for a full breakdown ,because I felt that we had been overcharged, I could not be bothered to challenge him because we were tired from our flight. THEIVES! To enjoy at a restaurant is simple. Good food. Good service. And a pleasant atmosphere. Well let me say, get ready for major dissatisfaction... we ordered 3 Grilled (whole) fish and a few orders of fries and the food was satisfactory at best. Surprisingly we did not get the price before we got our food and when we eventually did, the total came to Rs8100! That's the equivalent to around £160!!!! Now, I imagine that this place is a TOURIST attraction due it it being by the lake and the nice outdoor view and let me tell you dear tourists, you will most likely be scammed. Once we finished our meal we were going to pay when a man absurdly calculated our meal to be Rs 8100 as I mentioned above. We demanded them to recount and not only was he frustrated, he ended up making a 'mistake' in the calculation and that it was about Rs 3000 less. By the way, after analyzing many reviews I have come to a conclusion that the calculation 'mistake' is a scam used on many people to try get a few extra grands from them. Overall just...
