I had dinner with my family at Maya Cañada. We had a starter and main course. I must confess that the food was good. Staff spoke enough English to help us satisfy the kids with leaving out the one side dish, replacing it with another, which was great. This sums up the positives.
The most annoying feature of the evening were the three waiters circling around us like vultures. While I was translating some of the menu to my kid one of the waiters couldn't stop recommending the fish, even after we asked to give us a minute. They asked if we wanted more drinks (three times!) before even finishing what we had ordered. While still working of the starter, the main course arrived. The waiter was so 'polite' to move my plate in order to serve the main course. During dinner there was constantly one of the waiters removing stuff from the table. A glass, a plate, another glass, cutlery, you name it, there was always a hand around moving things instead of giving us a little time to enjoy the meal. While still chewing on my last bite, the waiter asked me if I was finished and wanted to remove my plate which I found really rude. After doing so, within 5 seconds, I'm not kidding, they planted a desert menu in front of me encouraging to choose. We paid the suggested bill, including the 10% tip and left the place.
The second most annoying feature was that we were given an English menu with tourist prices which were higher by 50-100 Mexican pesos per dish which made the already pricey bill even more expensive.
So, overall, if you are Mexican, or even Spanish speaking, yes, do go there, the food is good, I'm sure you'll get more interesting prices and that the waiters will treat you in a more casual way. If you are a family looking for a nice and easy evening out for dinner, avoid this place. The service will ruin the atmosphere and for the money you spend there you can get 2 dinners and a lot more...
Read moreNot the place to eat in Palenque. The food was ok-ish, but totally overpriced. The thing that bothered us the most were the servers which were always around our table like a swarm of bees. After we ate our starters, they came with the main dishes and took away the plates even though we were not even ready yet. I would like to decide on wether I’m ready to eat the main dish already by myself and not just getting my plate taken away! They looked at us weird and when asked if they have a problem with us, they said no but continued to look at us the same way all night long. The only consolation was the live music, which was very nice. We did not give them a tip. They were about to correct us after looking at the payment but we were fast to tell them for this service we won’t be leaving a tip. All in all, don’t bother to go here as a tourist, they don’t treat you...

In December 2024, as Palenque is cattle raising area with good beef, we ordered oven-baked cochito of slow oven-cooked pork marinated in adobo broth (or sauce) consisting of paprika, oregano, salt, garlic and vinegar and wrapped in banana leaves in December 2024 (Mex$345). The cochito was delicious, well prepared and representative of local cuisine. Service was attentiveness and professional.
