Coconuts — Restaurant in Isla Cozumel

This is an edit to my previous review. They also lost a star.

First off this is a must visit when in Cozumel. Views are second to none, and the beer is cold. Nice atmosphere and no electricity.. so this is only open during the day time.. which is best anyways as it is on the other side of the island anyways.

The reason this lost a star was that this time (my second time begin here earlier this month) compared to the last time 8 years ago, was that the service was not great. Barley spoke any English and when they handed you the menu it was 40 Pesos for a beer (Dos XX), which is $2 USD, same as all the other bars on the island.. however this person was adamant that that was $3 USD. I know its only a dollar, but that is what happens when you don't know. They are aware of what they are doing and are trying to rip you off. So basically we got the beer anyways because you cant not with that view.. and just left no tip. Worked out to be the same in the end anyways.

Also.. the others working there just linger around and do absolutely nothing. Maybe if it was busier it may be better.. but oh well. Still great views and cold beer. They have relatively clean washrooms as well.

Also .. if you have a business card or license plate or a patch (police or fire) etc... bring it and they will staple it to the wall for you. Cool to look around and see who is from where. I didn't have one the first time, but knew to take some business cards of mine this time to...

Great location with lots of parrots and puppies running around, which was a lot of fun after a drink or two. Be aware, that Coconuts only accepts cash. All of their drinks were quite strong, but not the best I've ever had by any means. There were also constantly bugs in my drinks, but this is just something that you should expect in this area. There isn't really a way to solve the bug issue. My girlfriend and I learned about the strong drinks and the cash only policy AFTER we had ordered, which is definitely our fault, but does seem like something they should tell people up front. They weren't particularly happy about it (and I can't blame them), but we eventually made it right. We went back to our hotel next door, they called a cab to take us back to town so we could get cash from an ATM and then go back to Coconuts and pay our bill. We felt so silly, but they were very friendly and understanding about it. This is why I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 3. The food and drinks weren't the best but not the worst either. After reading many of the reviews for this place, I'd say to disregard the extremes because its actually somewhere in the middle. Yes, they have a book with photos of topless patrons in it. They never showed it to us, it was just on the bar. Not sure why that was such a talking point in other reviews. If you're staying at Ventanas Al Mar, i'd recommend having food there and then having a drink...

Update We returned a year later with high expectations for the blue margarita was my wife's favorite. This time we both were very disappointed. The food we ordered was fine but the drink was blue colored rubbing alcohol. At least that is what it tasted like. For $350 pesos you would expect that your drink would be halfway decent. Not this time. Come here for the view but save your money on their drinks.

This place has been well documented by many visitors so this review will be a recap. The view is worth the whole trip here. This is the highest point in Cozumel. You are paying for the scenery and atmosphere. We each had one drink and shared the beef nachos and our bill was over $950 pesos. Or around $55 US dollars. When your hungry you’ll eat anything so the nachos were fine for that purpose. My wife committed that she hasn’t seen any cows on the island, but we have seen plenty of lizards. This might possibly be where the meat came from. I’m sure it’s not but it gave us a good laugh. The drinks are good also and as advertised the blue margarita is STRONG. My wife said it was one of the best she has had. She did take advantage of the massage guy who offered a 15 minute massage for $10. Glad we experienced this place and would recommend it, just know...
