The Blue Corn Mama Cafe is amazing in many ways. The food is incredibly good because it is made with exceptional ingredients you will seldom find in common restaurants. The tortillas are hand made right in front of you by Huichol women using traditional variety corn, that was grown in the Sierra homelands of these amazing people. Eating here empowers Huicholes, as well as supports the planting of endangered corn biodiversity. Monsanto, and many other forces that endanger traditional corn and human culture do not want you to eat here, so enjoy life and eat out here often. A variety of dishes, from traditional quesadillas to blue corn waffles with whip cream and real maple syrup are served. Vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores will all find something tasty to stimulate their palate and fullfill their gustatory desires. The salsas are rich and complex. There is an emphasis on the use of fresh fruits and vegetables The fresh squeezed orange juice is not watered down as in most restaurants. The service is friendly and efficient. The owner is an anthropologist who runs this restaurant and the stunning connected gallery of Huichol art in order to give opportunities to Huichol people and support their culture and communities. She has worked for decades with the Huichol community, implementing health, education, and organic agriculture initiatives to help counteract the more often than not corrosive, exploitative influences of the "civilized" outside world on one of the most fascinating, rich indigenous cultures that has survived in spite of conquistadors, missionaries, alcohol, pesticides, illegal logging, and irrational racism. Eat well here often and feel good about it. It is recommended however that supporters of Monsanto and the WTO who wish to cling to their irrational belief structures should go eat at the...
Read moreWe were staying in San Pancho, but my son and daughter-in-law insisted we drive a few minutes down the highway to Sayulita. They wanted us to visit one of their favorite breakfast places in this part of Mexico - El Original Cafe Sayulita. They were right, and we enjoyed a delightful breakfast. Our waiter was very attentive, friendly, and helpful. The dishes were varied and appealing. We all wanted to taste what others had ordered!
We sat at one of the patio tables outside the colorful pink and green building, surrounded by dreamcatchers and God's Eyes and other colorful hangings. It was a unique and attractive setting.
The ancient variety of blue corn - soooo delicious! - used in this restaurant is grown indigenous Huichol people who live in the rugged Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains of Nayarit and Jalisco. The menu tells us that each meal helps the non-profit foundation, the Huichol Center for Cultural Survival and the Traditional Arts. Apparently, this restaurant, and its sister-business, the art gallery next door, are trying to help this endangered culture.
A website of Sayulita's restaurants presents this view: "Famous for their Chile con Carne, El Original Sayulita Cafe also offers the Sayulita local favorite - sopes. The casual atmosphere and colorful design is very welcoming and El Original Sayulita Cafe is the perfect place for families and groups of friends. Located on the corner of Calles Revolucion & Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez, right by the bridge, makes it really easy to find, close to the beach and to Sayulita center."
Well, we didn't come for the beach or the city center - we came for this restaurant and their food. We were not...
Read moreJewel of a restaurant in central Sayulita, just across the bridge from the main square. I stumbled upon this place while walking around town my first morning in Sayulita. I had the La Ranchera breakfast, which includes 2 corn tortillas with fried eggs on top, smothered in a light but delicious salsa, avocado, and extra meat optional. I had this with mexican coffee and bread on the side and dumped a bunch of their homemade pico de gallo on top as well. It was delicious! In fact, I went back each of the next 2 mornings during my stay to have the same dish. I found this breakfast with added chorizo to be the best option but the bacon wasn't bad. The coffee is hot and fresh. The service is attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is quiet (it was typically myself and 1 other table of people eating in side on each occasion) but also relaxing and non-intrusive, just the way I like it. Two thumbs up. Will definitely return during my next trip...
