This resort really exceeded our expectations. Marina location is the newest of the El Cids in the area. 200 rooms/suites. Booking at this resort chain gives you the bonus of medium sized resort personalized service and convenience with large resort amenities because you get access to all three of the ElCid resorts in the area. More on that later....read on :)

First impressions matter and this place started us off right.

CHECK-IN and ROOM: Transportation was included in our package and it was waiting for us as promised. Short 30mins from the airport. Easy and straightforward check-in. We stayed in a one bedroom suite on the ground floor which was facing the marina. Very central location. 20 steps to pool. Very clean and updated room. Big AC system for the suite, so everything kept cool easily. Internet wifi is not included which is the only criticism i would have, but free wifi just means you paid more for the room usually. $55USD for a week of wifi per device. Attend the presentation and they will give it to you for $25USD /device /wk.

FOOD: Restaurants on Marina resort were excellent. We were all inclusive and had choice of buffet and a-la carte menus. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner...We loved the food all around on this resort. Shrimp stuffed avocado appetizer is a must-have. Mazatlan is a big shrimp and fishing area so hope you love fresh seafood. Fruits! Eat them!

ACTIVITIES: Booked excursions and massage sessions. All met our expectations. Private beach was nicely setup with lots of loungers and extensive palm umbrella cover available. EZ access via 2 min watertaxi that is going back and forth across the marina waterway continuously. Service on the beach exceeded our expectations because the a-la carte food choices available were extensive.

Two pools available. One is shallower (4ft deep) for wading, swimming, water exercise and lounging. The second one is setup with waterfalls, tunnel structure and deeper (9ft) for jumping into from the tops of the waterfall. The El Cid El Moro location has a larger main pool but it is much busier and full of kids and people playing.

Shuttle service between El Cid resorts works really well. They have several mini vans that run between resorts continuously. Just ask for a ride from the bellhop and they will radio for one if they are not already waiting in the driveway.

PRESENTATIONS: We subjected ourselves to the requisite vacation club presentation and were pleasantly surprised that we were not hard sold. They said 90mins (it went 2 hours) of comprehensive info and offers. In return we got $300USD worth of discounts for excursions, massage and internet.

OFF RESORT AREA: Mazatlan is a colonial city so when you venture off the resort, you have access to local restaurants, small shops, pharmacy, supermarket, malls, flea markets, food markets, downtown (which has been refurbished) so it has its own historical charms as well as numerous restaurants.

There are two big malls in the area. The malls have typical US chain stores in them as well as local stores. All of this can be reached via walking, local bus, open air taxis (pulmonnias) or regular taxis. 11pesos (about $0.50USD) for airconditioned bus. 50pesos for 10 minute taxi ride. Ask the hotel staff how to use the bus...easy and cheap.

GENERAL NOTES: If you are looking for a quieter resort location this is the one to choose. They have all the requisite activities calendar/schedule and things like that, but done on a smaller scale. Makes relaxing easier.

This resort chain is all-inclusive optional. So with a suite, you can prepare your own meals if you want. Very viable as food markets are close by.

Basic all-inclusive does not include internet wifi, some premium alcohols, some premium menu choices like lobster dinner.

Laundry service on-site - wash dry fold for $4.50USD per load

Changing money to pesos: Local money changers gave the best exchange by 0.5 to 1.5peso more per USdollar compared to Hotel. Airport was in the middle.

That's all...

The resort has some good things but the bad things far outweigh the good.

For example, we stayed without the elite all inclusive plan for first half of the stay and the staff was good, food was good, ect..

Only major complaint was that they penny pinch you for everything. Want wifi? Cost you, per a device, per a day. At the rate we got it would cost you $400 a month for 2 devices, and once connected to your device, you cant switch devices. We work from home so this was a crazy price for us and 2 devices wasnt enough for us, for some reason we dont get phone service in the room, but we do anywhere else in the city. (They say that it cost for wifi everywhere else in Mazatlan, this is false, we looked up hotels after they said that and pretty much all of them give free wifi, including their biggest competitor)

The big issues were when we upgraded to the Elite plan, what is suppose to be their best plan, was pretty bad to say the least.

For example, remember I said the staff was good? The staff in the Elite lounge where you check in, terrible. Its as if you are bothering them if you need to check in, in fact the first time we went to check in there, after paynig for elite, she litterally sent us out the door and told us to go to the regular front desk and she wouldnt help us.

When you pay for Elite, they say you get a VIP elite check in with drinks that include premium alcohol included and hand made pastries and sandwhiches from like an award winning chef. They provided none of that to us, we even asked if we got it, they just said one word "yes" and sent us out the door.

We were not told anything included in our Elite plan, we get room service, but there is no room service menu, nor do they provide how to find it. We are suppose to get discounts on like spa services and other stuff, they didnt explain any of that, which, we were interested in, but didnt use because they wouldnt tell us anything. We even asked and they just said "I dont know" wouldnt even find the info, ask anyone, nothing, looked at us and waited for us to leave.

You are also suppose to have robes, slippers, a beach bag, and other elite stuff in your room when you check in, we did not get provided any of that.

We had to walk all the way to the front on multiple occassions to ask questions, that usually didnt get answered because they didnt know, or to ask for something we didnt get.

They hold us, the guests, to a high standard and penny pinch for everything, so id expect at the minimum for them to do what they say in the description for your money you paid, but they fell short.

Oh, and dont even bother getting drinks at the pools or the beach club, it was a joke. IDK what qualifications you need to be a bartender here but they cant make anything proper. Im not even saying bad, yes, it was bad, but they were no where near the drinks we ordered.

For example, a Pina Colada, everytime we ordered it at the beach club or pool, it was dole pineapple juice with ice, litterally that was it.

But if you order drinks for diner at the restaurants they are good and made proper. So they know how, but I dont know why the bartenders cant make anything right anywhere else.

Another example, ordered a Mojito at the beach club, we were given some sort of green juice with mint leaves in it and it tasted terrible.

Ordered a dirty monkey, no idea what was in it, but the color again was not correct and the taste was way off.

Also at the beach club we went to the bar area to order, they told us to find a seat and they would come to us to take our order, no issues. Or we thought, it took over 1 hour to get the drink order in, and another hour for him to come back and get the food order in. Why didnt we order food the first time? great question.

We asked for a food menu, they said it was at the chairs on the beach, none, anywhere, so we had to wait.

I was told the pools are heated, but they are ice cold to, couldnt...

I'll start with the good. Most of the staff was friendly and the hotel was very clean. It is also in a very safe area. The hotel is far away from all the "action" but they offer a free shuttle service to go to other El Cid hotels that are more centrally located. Now the bad... As soon as you walk into the lobby there are people trying to sell you things, it's like having human billboards jump in your face anytime you go through the lobby. As if having people in the lobby guilt trip you about you not purchasing their travel packages isn't bad enough-the entire hotel is constantly trying to upsell you. The restaurants, room options, internet, usage of towels, etc it feels like a giant tourist trap. They also give some “member” free or heavily discounted rooms so they can earn "points" by getting you to become members. After a few days of this your relaxing vacation becomes exhausting. If you need internet for online banking, communicating with your family, work, etc just forget about it. They charge around $10 a day per device, NOT per room. So if you want internet for yourself, your wife and your kid it's around $30 per day. Once you have the internet, the speeds are dead slow at less than 1mbps most of the day. Most hotels in the area offer 10mbps per room for free. Not family friendly This is NOT a family friendly hotel. It caters to retirees and usually has some type of aerobic activity, water tai chi or a volleyball tournament going on in the warm pool. The giant hot tub doesn't allow kids under 12 in it even with a parent, that's just one of the may rules that makes it tough to have kids at this hotel. Beach You need the water taxi to get to the beach and once you get there the beach is steep. It's not a great beach for getting in the water but it's a great beach for drinking and eating (they serve food there.) No cash They will not take cash, they must put everything on your room tab. The only way around this is by purchasing El Cid Hotels coupon vouchers with cash and using the vouchers. When you use these vouchers the staff doesn’t treat you the way they treat others that put it on the room or are all inclusive because they think you received the vouchers for free. Towels You have to check out beach towels with a piece of paper then carry that piece of paper around with you then check them back in. If you're planning on swimming in another El Cid Hotel make sure you take your towel because you'll need to re-register your towels in order to use a towel there. I can keep going but I will stop there, overall while this hotel is beautiful and has great views, everything about it is super inconvenient. I have stayed at 5 different hotels in Mazatlan in the past 3 years and chose this one to bring my family to for 12 days due to the calm reputation it has. It was a big mistake, this hotel feels like a giant tourist trap and it’s exhausting.

We have 2 small kids and decided to try this hotel and wish we chose a different one. The "beach" is a filthy swamp and smells like sewage. All the pictures you see online are photoshopped, I am sharing pictures I took last week and that is how it really looks like. Be aware of the following before booking: 1. They give you free internet only on 2 devices, even when reservation is for 4. Another device is $ US$15 per day. The hotel advertises free Wifi as an amenity but do not say anything about this restriction. 2. There is no beach. There is access to the ocean and they put tones of sand bags to make it a “beach” but it is just make it dirty, the water there is literally brown and the smell is unbearable. 3. Staff service is a hit or miss. For lunch , no waiter came to ask us for our drink order, I asked a waiter and his response was that I was not sitting on his “zone” and that someone else was supposed to serve me (there was no one else serving in that section) 4. On our first day, the computer of the door handle deactivated and we were not able to get into our room. It took them multiple trips and over 1.5 hours to get it sorted out. Traveling with kids and having this happen when they are tired is not fun. 5. Dinner reservations are impossible, they say you can book only 2 reservations per day but once you go, everything at reasonable times for kids is booked and they only have after 9pm for just one or two restaurants. They advertise 5 restaurants and make it sound like you will always have access to them, not true. Most people end up at the VERY limited buffet restaurant. 6. They don’t allow you to open umbrellas by the pool because it is windy. Obviously an area next to the ocean will be windy. Why advertise umbrellas on your website when people cannot open them? You can easily get burned in the strong sun, specially kids. All the 5 and 4 stars reviews you see here are because the hotel offers free things to people that give them good reviews, such as free snorkeling, reduced fare to see dolphins etc.
