Our Favorite Restaurant in Mazatlan!
Worth the wait (and there usually is one), so go early and get your name on the list. We were able to kill time around the Plaza Machado, which was hosting it's weekend night market, and is only a couple blocks from Topolo.
The ambiance and decor at Topolo is romantic and inviting, with lots of plants and trees growing through the restaurant. There was a musician playing beautiful acoustic guitar music.
Martin, our waiter, was top-notch the entire evening, as was the rest of the staff who stopped by to keep our waters full and plates cleared. Martin made us the best complimentary salsa tableside. We ordered it medium-spice level and it was divine. They also give you a black bean salsa complimentary as well, but you'll want to save room for dinner and, most importantly, DESSERT at Topolo.
Topolo is also known for their great wine selection and offer wine from one of the oldest wineries (or THE oldest?) in Mexico! It was a bit out of our price range so we ordered a bottle of an Argentinean red blend. Also very delicious.
For a starter we ordered the Tuna Tartare, which was prepared sushi style with pickled ginger, wasabi, cucumber, and fun editions like capers and green olives.
For entrees, we ordered the Salmon with Mango Sauce and the Tequila Shrimp. Both were well-enjoyed after some disappointing seafood dishes elsewhere.
We remember reading a previous review to absolutely order the Platanos Flameados (bananas flambe) and it was one of the best memories of our entire trip!
They make it tableside and ask you for an assistant to help make it, so it's equal parts entertaining, educating (you learn how to make it!) and delicious.
We definitely recommend visiting Topolo at least once. We tried to go again but it's closed on Mondays :( We will be back next...
Read moreSorely disappointed. Had heard such good things, but did not really experience that. First off, the waiters had some kind of misunderstanding as to who was serving us, which resulted in the interruption of our tableside salsa preparation. The guy who had set up to do it just took everything away! He did come back later, but it was the weirdest thing. We started with the famous watermelon margarita everyone raves about. It was good, but honestly, did not live up to the hype. We got the bacon-wrapped bbq shrimp appetizer, which was good. I got the cilantro shrimp and my wife got the Maz combination plate. The shrimp were ok, but the cilantro sauce was oddly bland. Some psrts of the combo plate were good, like the tequila shrimp, but the chiles rellenos were cold. My wife mentioned this to the waiter, who simply turned on his heel and disappeared. He came back with a new chile relleno, but by this time my wife didn't even want it. The waiter seemed really annoyed by this, even though she hadn't dasked for him to do that. Dessert was key lime pie and chocolate mousse pie. Both were good enough, not great. Our waiter was curiously absent for most of the meal, leaving drinks unfilled and plates uncleared. The bill was also very expensive for what it was. Too bad,...
Read moreThis is such a hidden gem in the heart of the centro historico wow. Literally hidden as you would not ever be able to imagine the interior of this gorgeous place from the street.
Going there for dinner means soft light, and warm sax music coming from the musician in the corner, the rustic seating on flagstones, the water feature, the art on the walls, and the huge trees growing in the middle of the space coverered in hanging lights and laterns. Super romantic.
The service is 5-star, with fresh table-side salsa to start, with black bean relish on the table. The portions are enormous, so try not to fill up (it's very hard to avoid this!). Topolo had the best coffee out of all the places I tried in Maz, it was so delicious. The food was also delicious, but we all found it very hard to finish. The service was very warm and welcoming, and the bathrooms were very clean.
You really have to experience this place to fully appreciate the atmosphere you see in the pics, it really is a magical, special-occasion place perfect for celebrating...
