I am a scientist and a skeptic so when I see that a place has 5.0 stars after over 150 reviews, I feel compelled to investigate and even be a little overly critical. Well, instead, let me tell you how much food I got for 25 dirhams ($2.75USD): the biggest (by a long shot) and best (also by a long shot) harira I’ve had in Morocco (their favorite soup), two pieces of bread (tasty and basically free), three fried eggs, a bowl of hot sauce (bizarre but awesome), grilled chilis, Moroccan bologna (it’s a thing!), Moroccan cheese, and the star of the first course: 4 huge deep fried Moroccan potato balls. These weren’t just deep fried mashed potatoes but had some of the weirdest spices I’ve ever tried (in a good way). My 25 dirham worth of food actually had to come out in stages since my table couldn’t fit it all. From his neighbor I got that beautiful kebab and egg plate in the pocket was easily enough for two people. It came with bread and tea for the ripoff price ( ring sarcastic here) of $5. Ok, so $7.50 may not be on par with Thailand but it was 3-4 meals’ worth of food. And it wasn’t like they just slop meat and starch on a plate. Everything was high quality and well seasoned.
The owner is super nice, speaks good English, and just keeps bringing you more food if it looks like you’re about to polish off any one thing. Were it not for the locals eating there and the boards of five star reviews, I’d chalk it up to me hitting them on a good day but it seems like it’s always this kind of great experience!
I sort of expected amongst my best Moroccan meals would also be the cheapest but this was the best value by a...
Read moreSo good we went twice. The best Moroccan food we had in Marrakesh, Tangier, Meknes and Rabat. We are vegetarian and asked for a baguette with everything except meat. The baguette was stuffed with garlicky fried potatoes, tomato salad, cheese, fresh coriander and loads of other goodness. I also had harira: traditional lentil and chickpea soup. Two of these baguettes and one bowl of soup was 25 dirham (about £2). The owner is very friendly and speaks great English. Can’t recommend...
Read moreI've been in Meknes 9 months now, and hands-down best place for cheap, local food. Fresh, local, healthy (!!!) food, seriously less than $5 for a hearty meal for two. Very friendly staff, mostly locals on their lunch rush, and warm traditional, REAL moroccon food, such as lentils, roasted veggies, fried sardines, local soups, beet juice, salads, and more! Sandwiches on the go also available. Please check it out and say hi to your friendly...
