Friday evening, 7:30 PM. We step into restaurant Fyr, tucked away in a beautiful part of Amsterdam East. The building with its distinctive "Czaar Peter Kwartier" flag welcomes you immediately.
Once inside, you're immersed in an atmosphere that puts you at ease. The large bar forms the heart, surrounded by cozy low tables, with some high ones along the side. Through a passage, you reach another room, somewhat more business-like in character, but ideal for private gatherings.
What made this evening so special? It was the four ladies who served us. And don't be misled by that number. It wasn't excessive luxury, but pure choreography. One kept a sharp eye on whether you needed anything, another took care of the drinks, another brought the bread, and then there was the one who came by for genuine connection, human warmth.
The menu was surprisingly different. We were explained (in a charming French-English mix) that you can freely choose from courses inspired by local ingredients, divided across water, earth, air, and fire. In meat/fish or vegetarian. We chose five courses of meat/fish. What a right choice.
The portions were just right. Not too much, but certainly not stingy. Each course was a little celebration of flavors. By focusing on the different elements and pairing them with super fresh ingredients, we were presented with something surprising time and again. It doesn't have that stiff Michelin vibe, but is perfect for people who love special combinations and want to truly taste something.
But the best part of the evening? That was the people. Lunninia (I probably still pronounce her name wrong), a French artist who moved to Amsterdam for her Italian boyfriend and is already in love with the city. Or Luca, who after working at places like het RIJK now helps shape the soul of Fyr.
They were so attentive, so present. If you took the time to listen to them, they listened just as genuinely back to you. They literally put their things aside to have a real conversation with you. Never pushy, always appropriate, but so warm and engaged.
We talked about it later: someone with the right DNA brought this team together. You feel that people work here who truly care about what they do and about those for whom they do it.
Fyr is not just a restaurant. It's a place where culinary craftsmanship meets human warmth. Intimate, sweet, special.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. And don't leave too quickly, savor...
Read moreThe restaurant is in a quiet area, there are big windows and has a simple yet welcoming design, with most of the kitchen open to view. The concept is interesting and I can only support the use of (mostly) local products! The mix of those ingredients is also successfull, with tasty dishes and some interesting flavour combinations. We opted for the 6 course (one classic and one vegetarian) and I enjoyed it! Only a couple of options were, in my opinion, a bit more "boring".
We found the service very friendly (which i love), but also slow, as other pointed out (for us it was not a problem though, as we really like slow evenings when we go to a fine dining experience) and, unfortunately, a few minor distractions that would be totally OK if we were not in a fine dining location (e.g. we got asked if we wanted more bread but that never arrived until we proactively asked / they never asked us which menu we wanted between veg and classic, they only asked for allergies). I'd expect something smoother. It's fair to say that we received a discount for the inconveniences, which is ofc appreciated.
Special mention to the wine pairing! We loved it 💗
Overall, it was a pleasant experience, but i feel you need a few adjustments to match that...
