This review is so long overdue, it feels criminal. I have been visiting beautiful Curacao for over two decades. And II have had the pleasure of eating numerous meals each year at Sol Food for the past eleven or twelve of those years, pretty much around the time that the owners, Sunshine and David, opened up shop, so to speak. The restaurant is small, maybe ten or twelve tables on a raised platform, with a gorgeous view of Grandi Beach. The menu is fairly basic, but there is enough variety to suit all tastes. There are, for example, several types of fish, including tuna, snapper and tilapia. There are salads, including shrimp Caesar and a wonderful chicken Caesar, that is not to be missed. There are simple items, such as hot dogs and hamburgers. Pizzas are a very hot item. The steaks look awesome, but I can’t attest to having tried one. Ditto the very popular brownie desserts that Sunshine makes, as I’m usually too full to even contemplate one. Sunshine also offers what she refers to as her “whimsies”, which are a side dish, concocted with whatever vegetables are of interest to her on that particular day. Another item not to be missed! The prices are very reasonable, considering that you are visiting a tourist destination. The restaurant is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only, lunch and dinner, beginning at noon. It is advisable to call and make a reservation, in light of the above-mentioned size of the restaurant. For me, the absolute best aspect of Sol Food is not something to be found on the menu. Unless, of course, you can eat ambiance. The place has a feeling of peace and serenity to it, with lovely breezes, beautiful flowering bushes and a stunning view of those azure Caribbean waters. That is definitely the best part. Oh, and Sunshine and David, of course, two of the nicest people you could ever...
Read moreWent for dinner at 5:30 Sunday evening. We did not have reservations but they had a couple of tables available and we were seated quickly. We ordered drinks along with 2 pizzas and a hamburger. Drinks came quickly. The owner came over and chatted with us while we were waiting on food. She seemed very pleasant. The first pizza arrived and nothing else for at least 10 min. The next Pizza came and we ordered another beer. We never saw anyone again. No burger, no beer, no water left. Tried to catch waitress as she would go by but no response. We were totally ignored as other tables around us were getting, what appeared to be, great service. A large party came and went before we tracked someone down for a bag to take some pizza home. We asked for the check - several more minutes went by. The owner brought a bill to the table behind us and went over their bill in US dollars and gave them different options to pay. We had a little bucket dropped off with our check. I planned to pay with credit card but sat again waiting for someone to let us pay. We finally got tired of waiting and I put cash in the bucket and left. Not one word from the owner (right next to us) or the wait staff. Not a single thank you, goodnight, apology for not serving us all of the food we ordered - nothing. I am one of the last people to complain about service on an island. They work hard and I don’t expect the service we get in the US but this was beyond just slow service. I really thought we must have done something to offend them or make them mad for completely ignoring us! That’s how bad it was! We are 3 middle-age women who just went for dinner. The pizza was excellent - the only reason for the second star. It’s too bad because the food was good but there are plenty of other restaurants who appreciate their...
Read moreMy family ate here for our first lunch on the island a couple of weeks ago. We went for lunch after swimming with the turtles at playa piskado. We did not have a reservation but we had no issue getting a table for lunch. Our children loved the location and it did feel like we were in a treehouse, it was beautiful. Service was wonderful and Sunshine went above and beyond giving us advice on things to do with our kids as it was our first day in Curacao. She actually had printed out several pages of hand typed personal recommendations for us to take with us and we utilized almost all of them! She even drew us a map to a good children's museum and the kids did love it. I was in shock of her customer service and kindhearted spirit—that was just so sweet! The food was absolutely delicious, we had a good sampling of the menu between all of us and everything was fresh and just incredible. Our kids had pizza (which we helped ourselves to), my red snapper was cooked and seasoned perfectly, our chicken Caesar salad was the best I’ve even had and my husbands burger was one of the best we tasted on the island. Do yourselves a favor...
