Uchi - Asian Fusion Cuisine — Restaurant in Geldrop-Mierlo

Went in with high expectations seeing the pictures, good reviews, and high prices. I requested a table for a romantic occasion when booking, however the table we got was all but that. The chopsticks we got were pull apart cheap ones, which was a bit weird for the prices of this restaurant.

Service was okay, however our first dish was served to the wrong table, so we had to wait a little longer. The servers were new at this restaurant, so I do not blame them personally for the mistakes.

Appetizers were decent, so despite the mediocre vibes and service, we decided to order the sashimi.

The sashimi was some of the worst I've had so far, did not seem fresh, and was not high quality at all. Not to mention some of the fish still had bones in it. I think this is ridiculous for a €35 plate of sashimi.

On another note, the bluefin tuna is apparently only available if you pre-order it when you make your reservation, which was not mentioned anywhere.

All in all, I think this restaurant spends too much time on aesthetics and nice pictures, and not enough on the actual food. Would not recommend going here if you are expecting high quality...

Het is vrijdagavond en wij zijn er met vijf personen. Wij zijn hier vaker geweest, ook toen Uchi nog D'n Brabander heette. Het interieur is prachtig: zwart plafond, meubels fluweel zacht, lampen met een prettig accentkleurtje. Indrukwekkende (kwalitatieve) kunstplanten, welke de sfeer op hoger niveau tillen. Het is hier zowat mysterieus en intiem. Onze tafel is mooi gedekt met een wit laken. De borden en glazen zijn prachtig, vooral de waterglazen. Je ziet en voelt de liefde voor de zaak in elk detail.

Wij bestellen. De kaart is groot/uitgebreid met name in de 'voorrondes'. Wij weten niet wat wij moeten bestellen. De hoofdgerechten zijn wél duidelijk.

Als de eerste ronde arriveert, is iedereen blij. De presentatie van de warme appetizers is plezier voor je oog en het eten ziet er super aanlokkelijk uit. Ik daarentegen ben alles behalve blij. Los van de presentatie van mijn gerecht (bergje zout, coquilleschelp, mooi bord), is mijn gerechtje heel summier. Ik heb een coquille met shiitake met truffelsaus besteld. Jongens, je hebt coquille en coquille, zeg maar. Ik kreeg een (baby)-coquille van ongeveer 1 cm doorsnee groot met dito shiitake'tje stuk (geen hele) er bovenop en met een theelepel sausje. Plezier: €9,50. En wellicht prima, als je in een Michelin-aanhikkend restaurant zit.. Maar kom op!! 1 centimeter doorsnede coquille voor 10 euro?!

Tweede ronde is sushi en gerelateerde. Hier alsmaar complimenten. Elke sushi keuze (van ons) was super. Wij hadden eenvoudige en complexe sushi's. Alles smaakte. En spider-roll sushi zelfs twee keer besteld. Zo ontzettend lekker waren ze!

Hoofdgerecht. Wij hebben aan onze tafel 4 verschillende gerechten uit het hoofdmenu: kip, varken, rund, lam. Alle 4 de vleesgerechten worden heel goed bereid. En nu de prijsvraag. Wat krijg je voor je geld? Het hoofdgerecht vlees begint met ongeveer €23. Jij krijgt zowat 120 gram vlees begeleid met een halve wortel, een stukje courgette ter grootte van een vinger en een 1 cm toefje zoete aardappelpuree. De saus is 'teriyaki' of 'zoet-zuur'. Wij hebben de sauzen onderling geproefd/vergeleken. Blijkt dat dezelfde sauzen worden in de meerdere gerechten toegepast. Prima voor ons. So far so good.

Nu komt het. Wat mij dan eigenlijk aanstoot (los van coquille) dat het hoofdgerecht slechts dat beetje vlees en halve wortel behelst (€22+). De saus is heel intens. Helaas geen kans om de intense saus te compenseren met iets.. van een bijgerecht? Een schaaltje rijst, echt wel een een handjevol rijst (150gr), is niet inbegrepen. Dat schaaltje moet €5 extra kosten. Gebakken rijst smaakte niet anders dan bij de concullega's van "Oosterse" tak in Geldrop (waar je voor €5 goede 700gr lekkere dito rijst krijgt). Een schaaltje gestoomde groente: zelfde verhaal. Het gaat jou €6 kosten, waarvan 40% taugé is (niet mijn favoriet). Conclusie: sushi en allerlei = prijzig maar zeker goed en moeite waard om te proeven. De prijs/kwaliteit verhouding vooral t.a.v. hoofdgerecht is niet ok. En de ene coquille à €9,50 is het echt niet waard. Ik ben na drie keer proberen voorlopig uitgeUchit.

PS: personeel is niet per se kundig, maar prettig aanwezig en betrokken....

What a nice restaurant. This one is close to Eindhoven, but the best in the region. Whenever I am close to Uchi I will go again. Their food taste very good and you can see and smell the quality. The Sushi rolls are unique and presented with style. But style aside, the quality isn't forgotten.

But it doesn't stop there. Not only does the sushi taste super, the other dishes were very good as well. You could taste the perfect wok hay in the Yaki Udon. You could enjoy the shrimps in many different ways. I advice to try them all.

To finish the night, we ordered dessert that fit our taste. Its was far from a quick cheap dessert. It was fancy, tasty and well though of. Match your whole experience with a nice drink, they offer a lot of nice drinks.

The staff is nice and quick, the location is beautiful with free parking after 18:00.

I would advice visiting Uchi if you are close to Eindhoven, it is...
