Arsenaal 1824 Grand Café en Restaurant — Restaurant in Nijmegen

Nice place, nice atmosphere, good price / quality. Unfortunatly 3/5 for me. When receiving main course, Dutch style 'fritessaus*' is served instead of 'mayonnaise'. Asking waiter on this error he claims they actually serve 'mayonnaise'. Not! You would expect this in any cafeteria in the netherlands (most people in the Netherlands don't seem to know the difference), not in a restaurant. Difference between 'mayonnaise' and 'fritessaus' is as clear as a difference between a chardonnay and a beer. A shame, which can be easily corrected of course! I would consider updating my review if this error get's corrected! Cheers :)

Fritessaus is the cheap and tasteless equivalent to mayonnaise in the Netherlands. Where Mayonnaise consist out of a bare minimum of 80% oil, fritessaus is actually made with less oil & sweetened. Unfortunately in many places this is still put put on the menu as 'mayonnaise'. Which of course is a disappointed to a mayonnaise...

Probably one of the best and most beautiful spots in the centre of Nijmegen, however the service and the food was unacceptable. We sat down and had to wait 20 min before someone came and took our order, and the completer staff was very unorganized. There more than enough waiters for the amount of people but I guess they were all very inexperienced.

For lunch, I ordered the steak tartare and the quality of the meat was not great, the egg to mix it with was overcooked (better pair it with poached eggs), and the sauce wasn't tasty. Overall it wasn't worth the money. Having said that, some of the more simple dishes (which are easier to prepare) looked alright. So as long as you stick to the snacks menu you'll be alright. Kitchen and staff are quite the shame, as the place itself is very cool, however don't let it...

Just had an amazing lunch here. Location is beautiful, staff very friendly and food delicious.

I have a extreme gluten allergy, which is not always easy to deal with as a restaurant. They gave me a fair warning that there is always the possibility of cross contamination which they can't help. But they would do their best. And they delivered, I had a delicious burger. When the burger was brought to the table they brought chips as well but warned me those were only for my girlfriend. And that they were frying some fries inna different pan or fryer for me to avoid contamination but that it would take longer. Hearing that made me very happy, because they clearly know what gluten free means. I will definitely come back again and highly recommend!
