My family and I were quite excited about eating here as our friends recommended it to us. Sometimes, I feel homesick from food back home( US) so I felt like it was a treat to go here.
We drove two hours to eat here and when we arrived it was easy to find. The place itself is a dream. It really brought back memories of eating at a diner(Which barely exists anymore). When we asked for a table, the employee helping told us that he did not have any tables available but told us we could sit outside to eat. We got a bit bummed out because that would make our eating experience a bit different as the outside part was normal. The employee told us it would be about a 45 minute wait until a table was available in their diner. We mentioned to the employee that we understood it was busy but if anything opens up before to please consider us as it would be special for us to eat inside the diner.
We sat outside and ordered our meal. During this time, we noticed many tables becoming available inside the diner. None, which had reservation signs on them. As more people arrived they were being sat at tables.
We thought maybe they had reservations. I went to the bathroom as some point with my daughter. I was talking to a nice lady, who mentioned she didn't have a reservation but got offered a table upon arriving.
I got a bit disappointed about this. I went to ask the employee who had helped us from the start if any tables were available by chance. He got upset and started to raise his voice at me. He said in a very loud way didn't i tell you we have no tables available. I said 45 minutes or more. What didn't you understand? It was enough for ppl at the surrounding tables to turn and look in our direction.
I told him, I was just checking in as I noticed empty tables. He didn't have to get rude because I was not being demanding. I was asking. I returned to the table outside. I just sat there and tried to enjoy the rest of our meal. Then, we paid and left.
Did it bother me.. yes a little. Did our experience get ruined? Partially but we made it work. Will we return? No. Did i report the employee ? No, I thought about it but it was busy and he was probably really stressed out from working. ( And no this is not a complaint about him. ). It is more of a retelling of our whole experience.
The food was great, diner style. We highly recommend it but make a reservation first if you want to eat inside and experience diner...
Read moreThis is an interesting place. I am American and from a state with a ton of diners. Tom's Diner is like a time capsule for an America that doesn't exist anymore, boiled down to all the stereotypical American things one associates with the '50s (Elvis! Marilyn Monroe! Route 66! etc.) and then thrown up on the walls lol. Diners like this do not exist anymore in America.
I will say that diners in America are AWESOME. You can get almost anything you want, and the food is always fresh and always homemade. We love our diners. This was not.. that.
Overall, I thought the experience was cute and kitsch but overpriced for what it is. Also, the food is very much Dutchified and that's okay. But, if you're going for the authentic American diner experience you'll need to do a lot better on the little things: for example, onion rings in an American diner are always, always homemade from nice thick onion slices in batter or breaded (not frozen like the ones you can get at any Burger King), and, expecting a plain burger that I could "dress" to my liking at the table like in America, I was very surprised (and not in a good way) when it came back to me with...
Read moreWhat an amazing burger restaurant! Everyone is super friendly and professional, from the staff to the chef, and they will always go the extra mile to make your experience great. The atmosphere is unique, full of American pop culture references... almost like a jump back in time or in the movie 'Grease', and every time you go back, you notice new details in the decoration. The music in the background is great, yet not too loud so that you can still have a conversation.... and the burgers are Absolutely Amazing! (I strongly recommend the "speciaal" which is not on the menu but is so very tasty.) They also have a huge variety of delicious milkshake. Trust the waiter/waitress, they will suggest interesting flavours that are all great... my personal favourite is the "peanut butter/ banana/ bacon"... and even if it sounds odd, it is so very very good! Cherry on the top, if your doggy is well behaved, you are always welcome to bring him in! Tom's Dinner has become one of our 'go to place' and everytime we has guests visiting, we go...
