SUSHIMAFIA — Restaurant in Rotterdam

Great addition to the Kleiweg area. This weekend I tried Sushimaffia for the first time and I have to say I am quite pleased. I will be trying this place more often when I am in the neighbourhood. For three people we ordered a large box called the Sushimafiabox, three orders of tataki (two salmon, one tuna), one order of truffle scallop rolls and we got one order of dragon rolls for free. This was more than enough for the three of us.

The Sushimafiabox is a large box containing 54 pieces, very beautifully put together with attention to detail. It contains an assortment of sashimi, nigiri, maki and urumaki. The tataki contains five pieces per order and have some sesame seeds on the edges. The roll dishes have eight pieces each.

To start off with what could be approved upon. The biggest disappointment was the tuna. In an otherwise very nice box the tuna stood out in a negative way because it had almost no flavour. I like tuna a lot as does one of my table companions and the tuna nigiri and sashimi were the last to be finished. Something that would never happen under better circumstances. The tuna tataki was a little better I guess with a part of the flesh being cooked. But not a lot better. My advice would be to get better tuna. If this is the highest level of quality available I think it is better to omit it and replace it with something on par with the rest of the box. It's better to be open and say you cannot offer the quality you want then to offer something subpar.

Another thing that could be approved in their Sushimafiabox in my opinion are the maki. There are salmon, tuna and avocado maki included. The Sushiamafiabox seems to be their piece de resistance on the menu. It looks beautiful, clearly thought went into it, there are some unique additions. To have space taken up by some quite boring maki that stand out in their ordinariness is a missed opportunity. I would recommend to replace these with something on par with the rest of the dish and leave the maki in a more ordinary box.

Some smaller improvements can be made by offering low sodium soy sauce and making the spicy tuna uramaki more spicy since they aren't spicy at all. I would appreciate a box with a selection of nigiri and a box with a selection of sashimi on the menu, which I didn't see now. The website has some major usability flaws that need to be improved. Finally, and this really in the details. One of my table companions noted that for the nigiri the fish is sliced quite rectangle which gives it a bit of a factory feel, not in line with how beautiful the rest of the box looks. She like a more organic looking slice more drooped over the rice instead of this geometric piece on top of the rice which she associates with the 'all you can eat' places.

Well what did we love. First and foremost the truffle scallop roll is an amazing dish. Very well balanced in flavour between the rice, the sea of the scallop, the earthiness of the mushroom. If I would start meal with that I would be quite happy. It is a complete and mature dish in its own right. It's a bit pricy but well worth it. Well done.

The Sushimafiabox contained some creative and exciting pieces that lifts Sushimafia above many other local sushi delivery restaurants. These are the salmon torch ebi uramaki, the shrimp rock uramaki and the beef foie gras nigiri. All very tasty and original. I did think it was a shame the box contained only two beef foie gras nigiri because not everyone got to taste one.

The salmon tataki was very nice, and I appreciate them offering tataki since not a lot of places have it on the menu. The tataki and sashimi were all sliced in reasonable slices with good thickness to experience the texture and flavour. Not all places do that.

Overall a great value, I hope they keep improving on the concept, get better tuna and I'll be coming back...

UPDATE 18-7-2022 Na bijna een jaar geleden SushiMafia ontdekt te hebben nog steeds een blije vaste klant! Al deze tijd consistent in kwaliteit, smaak, bezorging en ook superservice van de medewerkers! Ga zo door toppers. En voor de droeftoeters die klagen dat ze duur(der) zijn geworden… de kwaliteit en portiegrote is nog exact hetzelfde dus niet zeuren. Je boodschappen bij de AH en benzine is ook duurder geworden. De inkoop voor restaurants dus helaas ook! Ga maar eens zelf bij Schmidt sushi kwaliteit vis halen en de rest van de ingrediënten en dan moet je het ook nog maken? Sushimafia is die €3 meer echt 1000% waard!

WOW WOW WOW. By far echt zonder overdrijven voor sushi take away de beste tot nu toe!

Allereerst Bouchra die de telefoon opneemt is ontzettend vriendelijk, vrolijk, beleefd en behulpzaam. Ook is de bezorger een hele beleefde (snelle) knul (ik heb sowieso een zwak voor beleefde kids die gewoon hard werken maar deze jongen is echt een toppertje!).

Dan de sushi die is echt in 1 woord megaknetterversoverheerlijksuper! Ik had de Yakuzabox dacht dan kun je een beetje eea proberen plus de test voor elke sushiplaats vind ik qua versheid sashimi. Ik las iemand hieronder klagen over dat de “gewone” sushi saai zou zijn nou meneer mevrouw u bent zeker een all you can eat vreetschuur gewend? Echte sashimi en nigiri hoort “saai” te zijn. As in zo supervers dat je bijna geen vis proeft. Verse vis behoort namelijk vrijwel geurloos en “smaakloos” te zijn. Zodra verse vis namelijk echt “vissig” ruikt/smaakt is deze eigenlijk al niet vers meer. En bij sushimafia is het gewoon knettervers. Supervette zalm (voor de mensen die het weer niet snappen natuurlijke vet in vis hoort en komt vooral voor in hoge kwaliteit vis). Heerlijke porties! En de “speciale” sushi dus de makis en nigiri met wat extra zijn precies dat wat je verwacht een heerlijke explosie van smaak. Ook is de presentatie mooi en leuk met die losse edamame boontjes en ziet het er gewoon SUPER uit! (Op mijn foto helaas niet meer te zien want ik heb gelijk aangevallen en bedacht toen pas oja een foto 🤣).

Sushimafia heeft in mij in ieder geval een fan erbij en hoop echt dat jullie kwaliteit zo blijft! Helaas komt het bij nieuwe zaken vaak voor dat ze in het begin goed zijn en dan afglijden, maar ik vertrouw erop dat het bij Sushimafia goed blijft. Je kunt beter iets duurder zijn maar consistente goede kwaliteit leveren dan je prijzen verlagen en daarmee je kwaliteit weggooien.

Sushimafia offers delicious sushi for high prices. There are enough options on the menu, and the sushi tastes good. Unfortunately the prices are too high compared to the quality. For these prices I expected more! Especially the overuse of some ingredients like the sauce and other toppings is something which could have been better. I would definitely recommend Sushimafia to create their own sauces based on the standard Japanese mayo and unagi sauce. All in all it still was a great tasting sushi experience. Keep up the...
