Flax & Co — Restaurant in Christchurch

Food- After reading the menu and sky-high prices we ended up only getting hotchips, ice choclate for my boy, sipping juice for baby and a regular cappuccino for myyself ($38 total) ice choc was and hot drink were yummy! But the hot chips were over cooked and mostly burnt.

Service- Our waiter was friendly and approachable. we had to ask her for plates and spoons to share our cake that mum got. She bring us plates and knifes lol but no biggy

Atmosphere- not too busy when we went mid morning so not too noisey. Mostly elderly customers. Very nice café inside, nice decor and design as well as spacious! And loved the framed Flax canvases. And lovley big tables as a pose to lots of little ones squished together. And spacious outside seating area also.

Area/Surroundings- stunning views of Preston with a small lake across the road and kids playground and basketball courts further down. Limited parking.

Overall- We visited after reading about the owners and their vision on the website. Being Māori owned and the explanation behind the cafe name plus the bonus of being located on a street that aligns with it, we thought wed call in to support and see whats different and special about this cafe. The subtle differences are nice but no majot difference to other cafés and maybe i need to come back to give a true and accurate review but for now, 3stars given and wouldnt come back for hot...

I recently visited flax and co for brunch, and I have to say the service truly stood out. From the moment we walked in, the staff greeted us with warm smiles and made us feel right at home. The waitresses were incredibly attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being overly intrusive. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered great recommendations, even suggesting a few special items that weren’t listed.

The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the team worked seamlessly together, ensuring the flow of orders and food was efficient. Despite the café being busy, our drinks arrived quickly, and the food came out fresh and hot, just as we ordered.

What really impressed me was the genuine care they showed throughout our meal, checking in just the right amount, making sure our experience was enjoyable without rushing us. Took my friend out for breakfast. First time out after my double hip replacement. Found a place to sit on the built in seats on the periphery of the room. Food was nice but because there was a big gap between the built in seating and the table the plate slipped off the table and broke. Leaving food all over the floor. The owner (female) wasn’t happy. And said her husband had just washed the floor. She also told me not to move. Which obviously I couldn’t. I told her that I’d had a double hip replacement and it was my first time at a cafe. She cleaned the floor but left the remains of the food on the table for about 15 mins. The waitress who was much more friendly asked if I’d like another version. Which came quickly. When I went to pay, there were two meals on the docket. I had to explain to the the waitstaff what happened. They were confused as to why the second meal had been added.
