Papa’s pies and Bakery café — Restaurant in Howick

I absolutely love this bakery. It is my favourite stop every morning, not just for the food but for the people. The owners are genuinely lovely. They always greet me with a smile, a “good morning”, and a warm chat like we’ve been friends for years. That kind of kindness is rare these days, and it makes a real difference.

The food is always fresh and delicious. I usually get an egg sandwich, a fruit salad, and something for my partner. One of the things I really appreciate is that they offer healthy options like fruit salad, so I can still make a good choice and get some of my 5+ a day. On one visit, they had sold out of fruit salads, but instead of turning me away, they offered to make two fresh ones on the spot for me and my partner. You don't get service like that at big chain stores.

What really makes this place special is how personal it feels. They remember my order and always go out of their way to help. It is just the two of them running the bakery with no extra staff, yet they still manage to give every customer great service and care.

Visited Papa’s Pies Bakery & Cafe for the first time today after eagerly anticipating their opening since we saw the signage go up. And it was well worth the wait! These are some of the best pies we’ve had out east. The pastry was thick, buttery, and absolutely delicious, with a generous filling of meat, rich gravy, and just the right amount of cheese. Papa’s Pies is an absolute flavour bomb—10/10, no notes! The oat flat white was so smooth and creamy it practically whispered sweet nothings to my soul, and the steak jalapeño pie? Straight from the oven and straight-up life-changing. Flaky, spicy, savoury perfection. I nearly wrote it a love song.
