I finally found the time to write a review for this winery — and what an experience it was. We visited several wineries across New Zealand, including Waiheke, Central Otago, Wanaka, Martinborough, and of course, Marlborough. This one stood out as our absolute favorite, for several reasons:

The wine quality was outstanding — beautifully crafted, well-balanced, and genuinely interesting, especially considering the excellent value for money.

The lunch was exceptional. The small, curated menu allowed the kitchen to focus on quality and detail. Every dish was delicious, refined, and indulgent without being over the top.

The staff were incredibly warm and professional. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, yet the service was flawless. When a sudden downpour hit, they swiftly and smoothly moved all guests inside without skipping a beat. Many of the team members were young and likely there for a summer experience, but they handled everything like seasoned pros.

All in all, fantastic wines, an unforgettable meal, and truly lovely people. I wholeheartedly recommend this winery to anyone...

I was initially very excited but became extremely disappointed 20mins ago! I have always wanted to try Poppies’ wine, as it came highly recommended by my friends. I arrived around 2pm and informed the lady at the door that I would like to participate in a wine tasting. She pointed to the left and said, “He is conducting one now, go and join them.” Not wanting to interrupt the ongoing session, I chose to sit nearby and wait for my turn. During this time, the lady did not offer any further assistance or instructions, even though she was standing only 3 meters away from my seat. About 5-10 minutes later, a group of 5-6 people arrived and enquired about wine tasting. She immediately led them to the wine tasting area. I was shocked that she had blatantly overlooked me and had not even asked if I was waiting. When I expressed my surprise with a "seriously?" she simply replied, “I told you to join them.” I felt deeply disrespected as a customer who had planned to purchase several bottles. Consequently, I decided to leave.

Based on my experience, I wouldn’t return or recommend this place to any...

We fell in love with Poppies when we first arrived in NZ back in 2013 and have been back plenty if times since then. Great wines - an ever growing family that us bigger every time we visit. The usual suspects (done really well) but with some exciting late harvest varieties , a surprising Temperanillo and, most recently, a method traditionale. The cellar door tasting is presented fantastically by a passionate and knowledgeable staff lead by Poppy herself. For amateurs, like us, the provide a safe environment to ask dumb questions and a fun way of comparing different grapes and styles alongside each other. If you want more than just a tasting; then the platter delivers. Just like the wine, it is put together with love and attention to detail. On top of that I always come away thinking it is great value. Booking us essential if you want to get a table. On top of that - the team of people who look after you are warm and welcoming. A reflection if and a credit to Poppy and Shayne. Come for the wine. Stay for the people, the place and the platter. Poppies is the complete package.
