I visited The Snuggery several (okay, a few more than several) times during my two-week stay on Stewart/Rakiura Island. Such a neat place! As the name suggests, there are lots of cozy and snug nooks to settle down in for a coffee and treat.
The Snuggery is the kind of café that, if you were a seagull, this would be your regular joint—that’s if seagulls had a refined palate for the best coffee on the island (and probably beyond). Luckily, there don’t seem to be many seagulls on the island, just tourists and locals (20 years+ of course), all hanging out at The Snuggery.
The iced cacao was my favorite, accompanied by a cheeky raspberry and white chocolate muffin. If you sit close to the counter, you can often hear the subtle and clever quips and humor from the owners as they patiently answer many a hiker’s kiwi and classic southern cheese roll questions.
They only offer cabinet food, but there always seemed to be a good variety. I’ve also heard that one of the owners makes a mean Hawaiian pizza and is passionate about turning the tide on those who believe pineapple shouldn’t be on pizza. I think one has to be particularly lucky or a close personal friend of the owner to sample this said pizza.
I asked, and it turns out they make most of their goods daily: sourdough bread, cakes, slices, muffins, and scones.
A great place to visit on Stewart Island—I would 100% recommend!

Read moreSo we came to Stewart Island with a full crew of documentary filmmakers, we had many people with different food requirements and many different individual needs, Maggie and the Snuggery team not only prepared amazing breakfasts and lunches for us, they also sent us out with fresh baked cookies, thermoses of hot, fresh coffee, woke up before dawn to make sure everything was in order. We even came in two days when the Snuggery was shut and Maggie let us drink our coffee and eat our breakfasts there with her, the overall level of care and attention was above and beyond what any of us were expecting and we will certainly be calling in again the next time we visit Stewart Island. An absolute GEM of a place and a team. Thank you again for taking such...
Read moreThe loveliest, coziest, yummiest cafe I’ve ever encountered (which, after 50+ countries visited and counting, is really saying something 😅). I’d come back to Rakiura for their cacao elixir alone. I tried three different food items — brekky bun, mousetrap, and halloumi/beetroot sandwich — and everything was delicious (possibly a bit heavy on the mushrooms in the halloumi sandwich lol but that’s really just personal pref). Staff/service was outstanding, vibes were immaculate, and I can’t wait to return 🧡 ALSO, even though I’m not personally veggie or GF, I loved that there were options for both on the menu as it means I can bring loved ones here who do have those dietary...
