I don’t know what unholy combination of regret, sadness, and mystery meat I just ate, but calling it a “steak and cheese pie” is a bold-faced lie. This atrocity had about as much steak in it as a soggy sponge has personality.
Let’s start with the pastry, which was somehow both raw and burnt. It had the texture of cardboard soaked in dishwater, and the flavor of existential dread. The cheese looked like it had been scraped off a sweaty gym sock and microwaved until it cried for mercy. It didn’t melt — it congealed, forming a rubbery, orange goo that could probably be used to patch potholes.
And the steak… oh, the steak. I’ve had more tender meat from a car tire. It was full of brown goo, that looked exactly like cat jelly, I found ONE piece of chewy meat I considered naming it and raising it as a pet. There was also some unidentifiable gristle that crunched in a way that made me question all my life choices.
I spent the rest of the day questioning reality, my taste buds, and whether this bakery was actually a front for a culinary crime ring. If you love yourself — or even mildly tolerate yourself — stay far, far away.
Avoid at all costs. Or better yet, send it into space. I would rather eat a hanful of sand. Dont even get me started on the price, $7 for a slop of a pie which i wouldnt even pay a $1 for. Absolutely disgraceful this bakery even had the guts to sell...

I always wondered: why is the jam only one tiny little blob in the middle?? Not at Pauanui bakery. You get a full length spread of wild berry jam across fresh cream with the perfect cinnamon sugar mix on the donut. 10/10 would recommend. Their pies are pretty good too. And I think they have recently new owners that have upped the game of baked goods on the...
Read moreThis was our first stop in Pauanui. The sausage roll was soft and moist. The blueberry muffin was also great. The good thing is, there is no credit card surcharge. Plenty of free parking available as it is in the town centre. There is some seating capacity available at the back of the shop. Grab a coffee...
