I recently dined at IP Man in Eastbourne, New Zealand, with my family. While the overall experience was decent, I found the restaurant to be lacking that special something to make it truly outstanding. The appetizers served on trays were good, but the main dishes were rather average. Specifically, I was disappointed with my fried rice, as it turned out to be excessively salty. My companions also shared similar experiences with their meals. One aspect that stood out positively was the amazing interior of the restaurant. It had a fun, communal, and relaxed atmosphere, aligning with their "everything-goes attitude." The dining space was dynamic and modern, creating a perfect environment for after-sunset eats and a potential post-work hangout. It provided a great ambiance for enjoying a drink and snack on some appetizers. However, I wouldn't choose it for a main meal, as I believe it doesn't justify its price point.

My Prawn Pad Thai was okay. There was nothing wrong with it, neither was it amazing. It was very saucy and it had a good number of prawns. My wife said her duck was too salty for her. Unfortunately, she did not enjoy it. Both dishes were quite pricey for what they were. We wouldn’t describe the portions as generous. The service was good. The young lady that served us was professional. The venue was quite eclectically decorated which was fun. My wife loved filming it for her social story. We travelled here from the Hutt after this place was recommended to us.

The food is divine. I've never had better dumplings or bao buns in this country. The steak sandwich is a meal and a half, but I forced my way through because it was so delicious. The chef certainly knows his way around chicken and beef! This is a cafe, so you will need to order and pay up front at the bar. A small price to pay. Also, many wines, beers and cocktails, as well as coffees are available. Highly recommended 👌

My Wife an I have visited Ip Man Restaurant for a 3rd time. I do not usually write reviews. I am either too lazy or the restaurant is nothing out of the ordinary. I usually either, provide polite verbal feedback to the operator (good mainly) and/or "vote with my feet" for the lousy ones. However, this establishment has managed to provide consistently fantastic service and food on each occasion. Most businesses manage to drop the ball within our first 3 visits. (Doesn't make them bad - just average) We have been impressed by Ip Man with the friendly and efficient service provided each time. We ordered a Chicken Pad Thai and a Chicken Red Curry. Both were excellent. Flavour was magnificent! Too often restaurant food is served with a soft/mediocre flavour - as if the restaurant was afraid of offending a customer. We always share our food and I prefer spicier dishes so I had ordered a "medium" spice, my wife had ordered "mild". Both were hot and had fantastic flavour. My medium spice was still able to be eaten by the best critic at the table. We have been very happy each visit. Not with just the main courses, but also with the entrees and drinks we have ordered. All arrived quickly and were served by a staff member who made us feel welcome and appreciated each time. At the end of the meal, paying the bill was a pleasure. We will continue to visit as it is now...

Short of staff and young boy who served us was in over his head. We understood this and we’re very patient. After 55 mins I asked how much longer and he had no recollection of serving us. The chef came out and said if u paid the food was cooked - end of story. I then had to show proof of payment and explained again what we had ordered. He asked when we ordered and went back on till to check as didn’t believe us. The chef then yelled at this poor boy saying he must have given it to wrong table. He stormed off. I ask for refund and was told no can’t do refund right away they could take our name and number and contact us later. So asked does this mean our meal Is being cooked and he said presume so. He went to ask and all I could hear was yelling. Poor boy came out and avoided me. At no stage did the chef apologise or say anything nice to us. Left a bitter taste in our mouth on what had been a fab day. The meals came out and were nice although cold as it only took under 10 mins from When chef stormed off we were dubious these were freshly cooked. All this would have taken was an apology to us as this wasn’t our fault. Instead of the angry insinuation that we were ripping him off. I felt for the young boy on his own at front of counter who was doing everything but cook and clearly couldn’t cope. I suggest you get table numbers to...

April 2025 Where to start. Unpleasant atmosphere created by owner/employer/manger towards the young man on his staff. While we were waiting to be served he constantly spoke down to the boy , reprimanded him for reasons we couldn't quite see, perhaps he wasn't fast enough, whatever it was seemed unnecessary and counter productive. He also told the boy to get on and take our coffees to the table as we might fall over and then they would be in trouble. Offensive. We are older but none of us incapable. It is better that the staff deliver the drinks but without it being said why in a clear to hear tone of voice. One of our group was amazing and in a polite but firm way told the owner he had an attitude she didn't like. As expected the response was aggressive and she was told she could work there. Will never go back. Worst I have experienced and there was very little choice in food, it was a public holiday which might have been the problem with food but no excuse for the rest. The only reason I have given 2 stars for service was because of the young lad that served us. Without him it would be no stars if possible....
