Penny's — Restaurant in Wellington

I had a very disappointing experience at Penny’s café. I was interested in purchasing some of their homemade preserves for a friend, but noticed the jars didn’t have any ingredient labels. When I asked about the ingredients, I was met with reluctance and told, “I won’t share my recipe.” While I understand the desire to protect a recipe, it’s completely reasonable to want to know what’s in a product before buying it.

After I pressed further (as this information is reasonably expecetd to be displayed), the owner stomped off to her recipe book and shouted the ingredients from the kitchen, which was not only awkward but also unprofessional, especially as other customers were coming in.

I wanted to buy a second product but felt anxious about asking the same question after the first interaction. When I did, I was met with even more belligerence. At one point, she even said, “You don’t have to buy it!”, which made me feel unwelcome and embarrassed.

The entire experience was unnecessarily rude and disrespectful. It’s a shame, as I was genuinely interested in supporting the business, but I left feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable. Professionalism and basic courtesy go a long way, and unfortunately, that was lacking here.

On top of this, in the three visits i have made prior to this, the cabinet food was tasteless (while it looks amazing) and the food and coffee is crazy expensive (one i asked how much it was for decaf (1.50) and was told very defenisvely, that $1.50 is the avergae price at the moment..)

A good quick coffee stop when you're on the go in Karori. Penny's is a Karori institution offering a generous cabinet of filled sandwiches, pies, and savoury slices. Paid $8.00 for this mince and cheese pie. The filling was less than 1cm, no cheese, small and flat. It lacked flavour and seasoning. Sorry, but I get better value at the gas station that don't boast gourmet pies and cheaper. I love pies and this isn't a pie it's pastry with paste for a filling. Sadly dissapointing.Not worth the experiment. Hard pass....
