Quite a sad experience to be honest. We had a lunch there mid week. Not too busy and service was good. I had ordered just fries with aoli. They came out relatively quickly. My daughter had ordered beef nachos with sour cream and tomato salsa. The beef nachos appeared also pretty quickly. Except there was no salsa or sour cream. We asked and they gave us some (claiming it must have been left behind). The tomato salsa however turned out to be capsicum salsa. We then found a hair in the nachos. To top it off, they must have delivered the nachos super quickly because half the mince was still raw inside! When I pointed this out (politely saying, uhm, maybe you should suggest to the chef that he cooks the beef a little longer) the manager of the place said "oh yeah" when she saw what was on the plate. No "oh gosh, so sorry, let's fix it" or offer of a refund or partial refund at least. I thought this was pretty poor. Had expected more.....hence the low rating. Won't be going back. My daughter was ill for the day after...raw...
Read moreNot even average. Otaki has good places so no need to go back. Hard to think what was good. Bad attitude, sloppy service, no care at all in food or service. Not one thing poor, but many things. Pancakes cold. How hard is it to have them hot when you are just microwaving them? Missed orders. Lousy milkshake. Coffee was not slopped on the way; the milk had been poured all over the sides of the cup and then delivered. Menu and blackboard same item, different prices, missing items. ( Where was the missing sausage... Not on the blackboard, just on the printed menu). Food below average. How hard is basic brunch food? I nearly always rate highly. But this was rubbish with bad attitude. Poor from the top down it seems, but one wait staff was good, but sorry, poor management shows in the food, service and details. Ok for a simple coffee but even then you have plenty of close, good...
Read moreMy partner and I were just passing through and found Red's, and am so glad we did. Good ambiance, and some refreshing alternatives on the menu from just every other cafe. (NZ cafe's having the same items on most menus is something which bothers me, and denotes a lack of creativity, so I'm always happy to see something unusual.) And our mains were both very good; as we're our beverages.
But what really sold me was the Key Lime Pie. Having spent many years in Florida, and having a partner from Florida, we are devotees of the religion of key lime pie. Tried countless key lime pies everywhere from Key West to the panhandle, and North as far as Maine. So yeah, we are experienced in the dish, and try it everywhere we see it on a menu. And this one was world class. We REALLY enjoyed it. Best I've found in NZ by far!!!
