Maderas Sunset Bar — Restaurant in San Juan del Sur (Municipio)

Overall, it’s a good spot with strong currents for good surfing. The food and cocktails were so good, but one small thing is the reason they are getting 3 stars instead of 5. When we arrived, several waiters said it was happy hour. So when we ordered, we asked what the happy hour special was and were informed that it’s 2 for 1 drinks. We ordered a few drinks and had a great time. When it was time to pay the bill, all drinks were charged at full price. When I asked about it, the waiter said only the mojitos were 2 for 1, not the passionfruit and rum or pina colada’s we ordered were part of the promotion (which he never told us). I don’t mind paying for what I order, but I don’t appreciate the bait and switch so keep that in mind...

Total disappointment – never again!

Unfortunately, our visit to this restaurant was a complete disaster. The pasta wasn't just cold, it was also overcooked – absolutely no bite left. Salt seems to exist only in their storage, not in the food. Flavor-wise, a total failure.

The burger was equally disappointing: bland, cold, with the cheese just lying there unmelted on top of the patty. The bun seemed like it came straight from the fridge – dry and cold. The whole thing felt more like a fast food experiment than an actual dish.

And then the fries: there were exactly 10 tiny fries on the plate, making the plate look almost empty. For the price, it’s an absolute rip-off.

A real waste of time and money – I’m definitely not...

For being one of only a couple of restaurants at Maderas beach, we were more than pleasantly surprised at both the level of service and quality of food at Sunset Bar. We came here several times over the course of our stay nearby, and our server Thomas was attentive, friendly, and respectful every time. The food is fresh, hot and delicious. A great spot for watching the sun set while enjoying some cold drinks...
