I eat all over the world, at some of the best restaurants. I’ve had the vaca vieja at Asador Etxebarri; the lobster vin jaune at Arpege; the dry-aged duck at Eleven Madison Park.
I can’t believe it myself, but the beef biryani at Olive Beach is as good as any of those dishes.
It is shockingly good. If you come from New York, like me, it will upend any expectation you have eating at our mostly northern Indian restaurants. The rice is medium grain; creamy tasting but still with a light, fluffy texture; it’s faintly scented with the coconut that’s gone into this. The masala has an astounding depth of flavor - wherever they’re getting their slices from, it’s better than where I buy mine, and I buy mine from the best spice dealer in the US. I asked for spicy and I got spicy - eye wateringly so, for my western mouth - but it’s the good sort of spicy that you get when you use several types of chili so that some of the spice hits the front of the tongue, some hits the back. The masala is not entirely dissimilar to the best US chili con carne I’ve had, but the spicing is so much more complex and layered, and then topped off with the coconut. The beef is well marinated, correctly salted and tender; the biryani is served with a terrific pickled relish-type-thing that helps cut the heat and richness of the meat and creamy rice. It’s mixed just enough so that some forkfuls are mostly creamy, calming rice, before you dive back into the powerful masala. And despite the richness and deep, savory flavor, it tastes fresh and lively and never oily. Are there curry leaves in this? Something like that.
It cannot be improved on. There isn’t a biryani in Manhattan that is half as good. This restaurant has ruined all Indian food in NYC for me. And while NYC is not the best place for Indian cuisine, I’ve eaten at Adda and Awadh and other famous outposts of restaurants from India. So I may not know much about Indian cuisine but I know enough to know that this is...
