MID-VALLEY moves UPTOWN at Pisonay Coffee Roasters in Calca. Open just two weeks and they already have the best breakfast in Calca. As you walk through the front door and duck a little bit so you don't hit your head on the 500 year old Jesuit headstone above the entryway, you enter a courtyard of extraordinary woodwork and rock work and artwork. From there you might wander into the coffee roasting room, or the Tienda of artwork and fun things, or the immense back courtyard with a children's playground area and a cabaña like setting with comfortable couches and tables. Or maybe you prefer to sit in the gorgeous Oregon (USA) native grass at little ground level picnic tables, awaiting what will most certainly be an outdoor concert on a sunny day at some point. I don't know whether to call this a café, a restaurant, a museum, a coffee roaster or a fun palace. It has a bit of all of those and it's two minutes from my house. Someone called this a "Destination" restaurant, which it is, because it's not in a main location like a plaza or the Pista, so you have to know where it is. But it is well worth finding out. I call it a "Destination" restaurant because when I walked in the front door I thought to myself "This is it. I don't need anything else. I can stop...
Read morePisonay is excellent! I ate there several days for various meals and was never disappointed with my food. Among my favorite foods were the Pisonay Burger, the Omelette, the Açaí bowl, the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich, and the Gnocchi. The House Salads are also delicious. My favorite hot beverages were the Chai and the hot chocolate. For juices, I loved the fresh squeezed orange juice, the lemonade, and the strawberry with mint. The Mimosas and Pisco Sours are very good, and for dessert, I enjoyed very much the Tiramisu, the Cheesecake, and the homemade Blueberry and Goat cheese ice cream.
The service is great and everyone working there is so friendly and kind! There is also a store in their courtyard where you can buy all sorts of things; soaps, yarn, clothing, crystals, local artisan goods, etc. One day that I was there they had local weavers come down so you could see the work, heart, and soul that goes into weaving a beautiful textile. I even got to try! There was a night event where a beautiful violinist played for a few hours and you could drink wine, etc, and much on amazing charcuterie boards. I was there for their 2 year anniversary celebration, which was also a lot of fun.
Don’t miss...
Read moreThis is where the expats hang out. Food is super well prepared and to western standards, prices are quite reasonable for western standards, quality has its price. The ice cream is really good too, with real vanilla, and a super rich chocolate the other desserts are great too with my favorite so far being the brownie, no wait, the cheese cake! Don't forget to take a couple cookies to go.
My only complaint is that the coffee, is all mild south American roasted, no Italian roast espresso. So way too much citrus (sour) for my taste. Coffee is such a personal thing and I've been ruined by the Europeans over roasting when compared to how they roast it in south America.
It's a super chill place and a must when...
