Balay Remedios is a historic mansion built in 1917 in Iloilo City. In 2023, it was converted to a restaurant and events place to preserve the family legacy and showcase Iloilo flavors serving Filipino and Spanish cuisine.
The mansion is well-preserved, and from the outside, seemed very serene and quiet. We were even unsure if it was open. We peeked through the glass on the double doors and saw guests in the dining room so we entered. The interior was reminiscent of the olden days and I could almost imagine people in Filipiniana attire dining here.
Ordered dishes that are familiar but with a local twist — Bandi Brittle Salad, Spanish Chorizo Tostada, Tabagak Puttanesca and of course, the classic Pancit Molo. The calamansi leche flan was perfect, not too sweet with a hint of citrus. All dishes are big enough to share by 2.
In general, the food was delicious. The peanut brittle on the salad provided a crunchy texture and sweet notes on top of the fresh fruits - apple, watermelon and grapes. The tostada had a well-balanced taste. I liked it better with hot sauce for contrast. For the puttanesca, tabagak, local dried fish was used instead of anchovies. The pancit molo had a flavorful broth and garlicky but could do with a but more salt.
What needed improvement was the service. Food took an hour and a half to be completely served. It came one at a time, and we had to follow up the molo several times. The staff who took our order was not familiar with the food items. There were several OJTs who did not know how to answer queries and apparently were not trained for the job.
I would come back to bring family and friends only to try more dishes and experience dining in such a historic place but I hope next time I go back, the service will be much...
Read moreIts an ancestral home converted to a fine dining restaurant that serves both local and spanish cuisine. We had a taste of KBL and molo soup. Fyi for the curious, KBL in iloilo stand for Kadyos, Baboy, Langka which is soupy kind of dish- very tasty and a bit tangy spiced with their native Batuan fruit while Molo soup is pork dumpling in chicken and pork broth. Quite an adventure for my daughter who tasted both soups for the first time 👍👍😋😋 I loved their Ceviche, a favorite appetizer, but they served it with chunks of raddish which i enjoyed, a twist from ordinary ceviche i make😋 The ambience is quite rustic, but very nice. ideal for a romantic dinner maybe. Its location is right in front of the provincial capitol building accessible by taxi or...
Read moreThe menu is Filipino with a bit of Spanish. The room is large and the tables and chairs are nice. The walls are fairly bland and definitely not Spanish. The ceiling lights are awful. The food came in the right order and was nice. The chorizo, and soup nice. The Prawns with sauce were excellent. The Kare are sadly was just sugar. The satay sauce was too sweet and no spice at all. A real shame. Park is good at the side or round the back. The service...
