During my visit to Lagar in Madeira, I encountered a dining experience that was a patchwork of highs and lows, both in terms of service and culinary execution. The service at Lagar was a mixed affair. While one waiter stood out for his helpfulness and dedication, bringing a spark of enthusiasm to our table, the rest of the staff seemed disengaged. Their apparent boredom and lack of interaction contributed to a service experience that felt uneven and lacking in the warmth one anticipates in such a setting. Espetada and Swordfish Miss the Mark The food, much like the service, was a tale of unmet potential. The espetada, a traditional Madeiran beef skewer and a specialty of Lagar, was unfortunately a letdown. The beef was not only of a lower quality than expected but also overcooked. This preparation error stripped the meat of its natural juices and flavors, leaving it tough and unimpressive. The swordfish, another key element of our meal, suffered from inconsistent preparation. One half of the fish was undercooked, an oversight that is difficult to overlook in a dish that requires careful attention to detail. This inconsistency in the kitchen's output marred the overall culinary experience. Lagar, with its local reputation and menu offerings, has the framework to provide a memorable dining experience. However, the inconsistency in both service and food preparation suggests a need for greater cohesion and care in execution. The restaurant, nestled in the beautiful Madeira, has the potential to be much more than it currently is, should the gaps in service quality and culinary execution be addressed.

We visited here as it was near to a wine tour we had taken, I had heard about it and thought we would try it out. It feels very traditional in the actual service/food though the building is something to see, certainly different!. The food is what I would call traditional Madeiran, well that's what we thought anyway. Had the tuna and codfish mains, tiramisu dessert together with wine. The food was tasty, hot and served quickly. Whilst the service cannot be faulted it did feel a bit 'rushed', the waiters being very busy and constantly buzzing around did give a slightly less than relaxed atmosphere, don't get me wrong they were good at their job but maybe just relax a bit and smile guys! Overall we enjoyed it and would go back again 👍

This place is nice and a must go. Try to go on a Saturday so you can participate wine making process and mash some grapes with your feet. I couldn't do that because I went on a Sunday which is also nice because you see the final process of the wine making, and get to try the grape juice before it is fermented. For dinner, I eat a plant based diet so it is sometimes challenging to find options but I order a bolo do caco without butter, sopa de legumes and some sautéed vegetables. My family enjoyed the lapas for starters and then espetadas and bacallao which they enjoyed very much.

Fantastic place! The wait staff were the perfect mix of polite, professional, knowledgeable, and speedy. The food we ordered tasted great, and was out to us quickly, despite the place being packed. Same with the drinks; if you're not driving definitely treat yourself to the sangria! The traditional show was a great bit of live entertainment, and came out at the right time. If you have children under three, like we do, make sure they've had a nap during the day, and they'll surely get into it, and maybe even join in. We asked for the bill, and that came out quickly, too. We were a big party, so had to split it between card, and cash payment, which wasn't a problem for the staff. They even offered to call us a cab, as it's a little off the beaten track. Overall: it's a must...
