Category: Tourist Area. When we finished our hike from Eira do Serrado down to Curral das Freiras, we were famished. The first restaurant we came to was this one, but we wanted to see what this very small town had to offer, so we walked on. There are a few other places to eat in town, but we chose to walk back to this one. Why? Someone invested a lot of money in this place. Its new-ish sleek glass and steel construction and multiple indoor (which you can see from outside) and outdoor seating areas say “We are not just another tourist restaurant. We are doing something different.” We heard them and we responded. To be fair, we also wanted to dine with an outside view of the incredible natural beauty of the valley and surrounding massifs and this restaurant had a perfectly sited outdoor table. So we walked in and got the perfect outdoor table that we wanted. Then we ordered. Then we decided it was too cold, went inside, and got a different table perfectly situated to appreciate the wonderful view, but warmer. The menu is chestnut centric. Think all chestnuts, all the time. But that’s a good thing. If you know my channel you know I use chestnuts 🌰 (check out my chestnut and pear ravioli). They are underrated. And this restaurant is making Herculean efforts to bring chestnuts to the world. Not surprising. Curral das Freiras is the heart of Madeira’s copious chestnut production and hosts a famous annual autumn Chestnut Festival. To help further the restaurant’s mission and to support the economy, we ordered only chestnut-centric dishes. We shared the chestnut soup (chunky, with potatoes, but I dreamed of using their chestnut cream to make the soup), which was chestnutty and good, and the chestnut-and-sausage-stuffed roasted chicken breast with Dijon mustard cream sauce, which was deliciously more French than Portuguese, and the sauce was good for dunking the accompanying frites. Suggestion: pool the sauce on the plate, not on top of the chicken, to showcase the beautifully roasted chicken. YouTube’s...
Read moreThe Valley is all about chestnuts so we came here on the recommendation of another website and did not regret it. The staff are brilliant. They gave our daughter a bucket of duplo to play with and told us she could make as much mess as she liked. It made such a difference. The decor is stunning. The whole place has the feel of a city restraunt with such attention to detail you could easily forget you were about as rural as you can get. The view from each floor over the valley of the Nuns is just spectacular. It's a little windy on the terrace but easily forgotten in the beautiful sunshine and stunning surroundings. Our food was typical of the region. Chestnut this and chestnut that but Wow what these guys can do with chestnuts. We had chestnut soup and a plate of roasted chestnuts with syrup. So tasty and to be honest we probably should have stopped at that for a light lunch. For main courses we had the chicken with chestnut stuffing and the pork with chestnut stuffing. We loved it. It cost about 45 Euros for 2 courses 3 coffees and a juice which for Madeira is fairly typical. We've had just as good food a for less but certainly not with a view like that and this is a full on tourist stop off so you can expect to pay a little more. This restraunt we understand to be cheaper than most in the valley and yet everything about...
Read moreMy partner and I had a really wonderful meal here! We had heard really great things from both locals and other visitors to the island, so we rushed back from a long hike to make sure we arrived before the kitchen closed. The staff are extremely lovely, attentive and clearly care about their job here. The menu is varied and much to my joy they had some really good vegetarian options! To start we shared the cheese gratin in home bread bread. This is a really great starter for cheese lovers, it was like a bechamel cheese sauce but still with the cheese pull! Great portion size. For main, I had the tofu with chestnut purée which was delicious - this comes with vegetables and soy sauce. I must say the vegetables were seasoned and cooked to perfection, as was the tofu! My partner had the steak in garlic butter which he thoroughly enjoyed, said was very high quality meat and again, cooked perfectly. We finished off with a chocolate brownie, absolutely delicious, and a coffee. To compliment the food, you have the most beautiful views of the valley to enjoy along with it! I cannot fault my experience here, thank...
