Make reservations if you're going for dinner!
Lovely spot for lunch or dinner. If you're there on market days (Saturday or Wednesday) it's a great stop over for lunch after your shopping.
For tourists, the market is worth seeing, so this place is perfectly located just up the stairs and to your left about halfway down. If you're lucky you'll see the older man working on repairing rattan chairs outside of his shop next door. Also for tourists, keep in mind that whenever charcuterie: cheese, melon, various cured meats, or bread, olives, samosas or other appetizers are dropped off at your table that they aren't free and will be added to your bill. If you don't want them, make sure to let your waiter know. (This applies to all Portuguese restaurants, not just this one.)
Frequented by locals, the food is fresh, fairly well priced and totally yummy. I love the steak with mushroom sauce and special potato fries. They serve local main course dishes (the bacalau/cod is good) as well as lighter fair like soup, sandwiches, hamburgers and the Brazilian farinheira and eggs, so there will be something for picky eaters as well as more sophisticated palates.
Petisco is popular and is almost always full, even during the week, so go early for lunch and make reservations for dinner. Sometimes you can sit at the bar but it gets really busy so reservations are much safer.
Service? It depends. They do their best but like I said, it's busy. Once your order goes in, it doesn't take too long. Getting someone to take your order can be a little more difficult at times. But they're a nice crowd, and always take time for a question.
Petisco has two venues so if you can't get into one, you can always try the other. The market is my favorite but the food is the same in both places. Try it out it's...

The steak here is something I would expect from a random side of the road diner.
The picture looks way better than what was actually served… thanks Apple and lens enhancements.
We ordered a few items, but came here because of the glowing steak reviews. What we got was an aged steak that was overcooked and burnt on the outside (not charred there’s a difference), and they somehow managed to completely leave the steak completely purple in the inside and dry it out on the ends.
We talked it over for about a minute or two to decide if we would send it back… and we felt something was weird when they brought the steak over because our waitress scattered after bringing it over.
We decided to ask the waitress to fire it again because it was purple. Medium rare is what we asked for and clarified, which she repeated in English and then in Portuguese- we confirmed both. After getting the steak back it was almost well done…. And we rejected the steak.
From the moment the steak was dropped at the table the interaction with the waitress and staff completely changed from okay to avoidant and passive aggressive in some capacity.
As a customer I know that if I personally send it back it’s because there’s something genuinely wrong. Unfortunately we had such high hopes for this place and we were greatly disappointed with the service after a clear mess up by the kitchen and the waitress got upset because we sent it back and never came back to the table. This is kind of rude and unprofessional. The restaurant business is a service industry and we are not rude. We explained what we got and how we felt about it… and though it was be...
Read moreIt's ok. A second visit, the first of which I had good memories but alas disappointed in the second visit. Arriving early as I knew it gets busy and I had missed lunch we were greeted by friendly staff. I ordered morcela which was tasty, although I'd preferred a little more charred and a couple beers . Although service was friendly, taking into account there was 4 front house staff and only 2 tables getting a refill was pretty slow, and I would have drunk another 3-4 beers if the staff hadn't just disappeared . Main of steak in peppercorn sauce; the steak was still bleeding profusely into the sauce - i.e it hasnt been rested correctly, and slightly enemic over salted chips. Second main of squid on spit ; disappointed to receive a mix of squid and prawns ( prawns dry and I suspect not cooked from raw ) - I'd rather just had squid as it was the ingredient named on the menu. Accompanied by an under seasoned like of greens. I enjoyed it but .... I ordered squid.
It's reasonably priced and obviously popular but wouldn't be in a...
