Convívio — Restaurant in Mesão Frio

I'd give two stars, since the meat and rice were tasteful, but decided to give one star, to warn those foreigners/tourists who just like me look up the worst reviews before trying a place.

Let me first share that upon entering the restaurant the people looked like very hard working, no smiles and no attention for you, but sure, didn't mind. Before being seated from the bar in minimal words, we got a multilingual menu and could order ahead. At our table we received bread and meat (which showed on the bill, but that's normal), and received our huge portions of steak and lion veal right after. Then after a long wait and many waves we finally received our bill without any eye contact.

Here comes the fun part.

So the multilingual menu showed the prices. But the steak got replaced by more expensive fish on the bill and our beers were almost double the price. Tired of waiting and being ignored, we left the money on the table and left.

A truly authentic Portuguese experience. Family run, and wonderful food. I would recommend the grilled cod, it came with potatoes and veggies. For those who wrote negative reviews- I feel they are unfair. This restaurant is in a small town, so it is unfair to expect the locals to speak english. To have a truly authentic experience, it should be us, the tourists who learn the basics in portugese. And regardless of whether you are a tourist or not, every table will have olives, meat and bread put on the table, even the locals had this put on their tables. So it’s not a ‘tourist trick’. My partner and I split the cod dish, and 1 dish was enough for 2 people. We had wine, dessert, espresso and the price was very fair. I would truly recommend this place...

When the waiter came and spoke to us in Portugese, we asked if he spoke English, Spanish or French (we are from German and Denmark). He said something we couldn't understand, made a fist and just left. We managed to order, but the interaction with the waiters were without any interest, focus or enthusiasm. We didn't feel welcome.
