Rude, rude, rude owner! Give this place a miss. Lots of other good places to eat in Montalegre where your night won't be ruined by rudeness. We've been travelling in the area for a few weeks and this is the only establishment where we have encountered poor customer service. The owner did not say hello, goodbye, please or thank you to us once, yet was all smiles for the locals. We were kept waiting before being served despite having to make our booking for a time that suited the owner. My husband ordered a wine and the owner refused to sell it to him, claiming he wouldn't like it. My husband lived in Portugal for many years, so knew the wine, but felt there was no point arguing. My daughter asked for a spoon to taste the sauce on her Francesinha, but he condecendingly said the food should be eaten with a knife and fork, asking "How did you think it was eaten?" He picked up a knife and fork from our table and acted out using them. We've eaten Franceshinas many times, and know this. I tried explaining my daughter just wanted to taste the sauce but he refused to bring us a spoon. He didn't speak to us again until looking for paymeny. No one checked if our food was OK throughout the meal. The owner claimed the card machine would not work for international cards (even though it worked perfectly in the restaurant next door the previous night). He seemed to deliberately insert the card incorrectly and would not let us tap it for contactless payment. He also did not provide a receipt, which was very suspicious. When we were counting out the cash for payment, the owner came and stood over us waiting for the money. This made us feel quite uncomfortable as we were in the process of working out what each person had. We had to ask him a couple of times to give us a couple of minutes. This guy clearly has no understanding of customer service. Unfortunately he has the benefit of being located close to the castle with a car park outside so is guaranteed lots of business. The food and decor are great, but abysmal customer service. I would suggest walking past and going to the Castello restaurant instead where the decor and food are just as good, and the customer service...
Read moreIn the heart of Montalegre, this restuarant has a typical Portuguese menu. Meat, and shellfish with the traditional deserts.
Our food was well cooked and tasty.
However, disapointingly, the owner is a little rude and argued with our requests.
We requested a wine from the menu and he said that we wouldn't like it! Not sure why he would sell it then?
We ordered a spoon once our food had arrived and he told us we shouldn't use a spoon for the dishes we had ordered. And then just did not bring us a spoon.
He accepts cash only - even though he had a card machine and seemed to be purposefully using the machine incorrectly when we presented a card for payment. He refused to tap the card and kept sliding the card on the side of the machine.
I was disappointed with the creme brulee.
Toilets were small and could have been cleaner.
I would recommend the restuarant around the corner instead of this one - closer to the castle for a more...
Read moreGreat place. I found it kind out of luck. I was looking for a Barrosã steak.. and they had a delicious one served with cooked vegetables and amazing potatoes. Cooked in perfection. The starter was also delicious, three different kinds of meat sausage with bread. I drink a glass of wine and water. For dessert I had pumpkin jam with cheese... Adorable. Everything was around 22€ ... Cheap if we consider the high quality meat. Super recommended.
The only problem I encounter was the slow service. 35mns for the starter... But from there everything...
