I just had dinner at Alento, which translates as "Encouragment" in Portuguese, and so I want to encourage what this restaurant is doing by reviewing them. I am not a big "reviewer" and it takes a lot to get me to write one of these thngs, but this restaurant experience was extraordinary. Talk about a warm welcome! When I arrived, I was by myself and had not made a reservation (Yes, silly of me. Be sure to make one :)). Let's be real: who, as a local, probably doesn't groan a little at "another non-Portuguese-speaking tourist coming in without a reservation?" And yet, I felt exactly the opposite tonight. The server (I think manager?) rearranged the tables to make space for me (I thanked the kind people who shifted on my behalf). While he was doing this, I watched how much care and attention he paid to everything he did in terms of placing the silverware and glasses, being sure everything was pleasing: all this, despite the crowd and more people coming in. I felt welcomed and cared for--this is a special and precise art that only waitstaff who care deeply about their work can pull off (a chain resturant could never manage this). It's a given that the food was amazing and --I thought--very reasonbly priced (I had three courses, including seafood dishes and wine--for under 50Euros). This kindness has extended out, for me, to the whole town of Vila Nova de Milfontes and left me wanting to return to both the restaurant and the town. Congratulations, Alento: keep doing what you're doing because...

Read moreWe had an excellent dinner for three at Alento last night. For starters, we were served Tiborna, which are baked bread small bites with olive oil and garlic - amazing - and shrimp with mussels sauce, the best sauce I remember having in Portugal so far, it was so great that we ordered more bread to do “la scarpetta” as done in Italy. For our main course we had the Porco Ibérico (iberian pork) with portuguese chestnut risotto, the Pato (duck) with mashed sweet potatoes and the great star of the night: the Tamboril (monkfish) risotto, one of the best dishes I’ve had in a restaurant in Portugal, simply delicious, harmonizing greatly with the wine served, perfect to the detail. I strongly recommend any person visiting Milfontes to try dinner at Alento. Also suggest you make a reservation - the place tends to get more crowded within time and, during summer, they only accept reservations untill...
