I am shocked that there are so many 4 & 5 ⭐️ reviews for this place. We did not think it was anywhere worthy of such rankings and we were sorry because Alentejo is our favorite region and cuisine. But for that reason, I simply cannot attribute top ranking to this gimmicky restaurant. Most of the energy is out into the decor and presentation but less into the actual quality and flavor of the food.

The starters were all small dishes covered in Saran Wrap in a regional platter. They are cold. You are charged by what you unwrap and try. Beyond that, the menu is very limited, not at all expansive like the cuisine of the region.

We also did not have a friendly server so it made our experience even less enjoyable. We will not return nor will we recommend the...

It's weird that one has to leave Lisbon in order experience this kind of restaurant.

The decor itself is very kitch and cosy. It has the feeling of a true house in Alentejo.

It's weird that once you sit the food waiting for you has a little plastic covering it. I was explained this has to do with regulations - it is what it is.

The food itself is neither the best you'll ever eat nor the worst, by a long shot. It's tasteful and the dishes well served. But lacks something I can't exactly point.

The employees are not the most friendly, but everyone is entitled to have some bad days.

On the prince front, we payed 25€/person. Considering what we ate, not that expensive.

The overall experience is worth at least a visit...

Always good to visit, doses are well served and staff is very attentive, familiar. It also feels so specialized in everything that it becomes a mix between a franchise and a highly developed award winning fan favourite restaurant. I'm only knocking a star because it's not a restaurant to go everyday and traditional presentation could be improved sometimes (meat being served with lots of bones for example, they could streamline it a bit) and... Those songs from Alentejo playing in the background really could go into retirement, this is not the "house of alentejo" for old people to gather and sing. Also, some restaurants back in alentejo manage to topple it, bit of course that's a hit far away for a...

Finally, authentic Alentejo food close to home (Lisbon)! I've been searching for a truly authentic Alentejo restaurant in the Lisbon area, and a friend of mine from Estremoz (Alentejo) recommended me the Zé Varunca restaurant in Oeiras, Lisbon. Having visited the Alentejo region many times, I know the flavors well, and this kitchen nails it. From the rich dishes to the quality of the ingredients, it’s clear this place respects the tradition. I felt like I was back in Alentejo. Amazing experience, will definitely be back to try more dishes.

The following is quoted from their website, and I agree with every sentence: "More than a restaurant, “Zé Varunca” is a family project that spans tree generations, that, since 1981, work embodying the soul and flavours of the Alentejo. It was by his mother influence that José Varunca de Sousa has been connected whit the restaurant and hospitality business, and since then he takes Alentejo beyond its own borders."—A must try!
