Parque dos Poetas is an unexpectedly large park fitted into the urban fabric of Oeiras and Paço de Arcos. It encompasses several amenities like kiosks, sport venues, car parking, a cultural center, etc. and transects the city from the Oeiras Park/City Hall to a few blocks from the shore.
The park has a theme-oriented design, following a 80s-2000s design trend frequently used in shopping malls, but also in Parque das Nações, and which was soon to be contested and replaced by a more "natural" and "ecology concerned" trend. As such, the park's design feels a bit retro even though its 3rd and last phase opened in 2015 only. The park's theme is portuguese poetry, as per its name, and 60 poets are represented in leaf-like terraces scattered across the park with sculptures from 40 artists. With a geometric and sometimes heavy design, pergolas, fountains, paths, stairs and pedestrian bridges crisscross the park, defining routes, wining over streets and topography, creating sitting areas, and housing amenities. Following the theme of poetry, a labyrinth, a temple of poetry and an island of love are highlight follies of the park, all in very characteristic postmodern style. Filling the space in between, spans vast stretches of lawn and vegetation (yes, sometimes it feels like the "green" was a secondary part to the design of the park and in some areas it is difficult to find a shadowed flat lawn with a nice view to lay down).
The park is a popular hanging out spot for the local population, and one frequently finds people playing ball games, hanging out around kiosks, appreciating the art, jogging, doing yoga and so on. As the park runs perpendicular to the river, it gains elevation and the views from the top of the park are quite panoramic, far-reaching and worth seeing. It is also towards north that the terrain becomes flatter if one prefers a flatter terrain to jog.
The park opening times varies according to season.

Read moreWhat a beauty round about a dozen kilometers away from the heart of Lisbon. When you looking for peace for mind, soul and eyes, when you need to calm down, go there and walk and look and breathe and enjoy. This place is so quiet that even the whispering of the brook deepens the silence. The park is maintained perfectly and left and right you can spot sculptures of famose Portuguese poets from the centuries back to medieval times. The best approach is from down the street (R. Costa Pinto) through the main gate and go upwards. There you can enjoy the artificial ponds and impressive fountains. Don’t miss to turn back from time to time: the higher you get the more amazing becomes the view down to the waterfront. If the weather is fine, you will spot an unbelievable wide range until Costa da Caparica, Ponte 25. Abril and Cristo Rei. We got lucky by chance the day we went there. The middle section hosted the world press photograph exhibition, which was not only a collection of well shot pictures from around the world. It was like walking through a book where every picture told its own story. Before you start to climb the hill and stairs up to the highest point with the Temple of Poets and a golden topped obelisk you find a kiosk at the lefthand side where you can get some food, coffee and refreshments. You should consider enough time to make it through the whole area. When we became aware that there would be a third part to look at we were already exhausted from the hours on foot and the summer like temperature. So we stopped at this point to keep us safe from information overload and for keeping in mind, that we have to come back to finish the walk. Because there’s one thing there can be no doubt about: The Park of Poets is a strongly recommended place to visit. At least once, if not more often. Just for the fun of it and to enjoy...
