I live on the ocean, in Peniche. We have arguably the best seafood in Portugal, coming in through our markets. And until eating at Peixão, I was certain I had the best of the best.
Well, not only was the fish at Peixão the best I’ve ever eaten (I had the sea bass which was caught hours before and on ice when I arrived), I would say that after living in the country for now 3 years, Peixão is the best restaurant in Portugal. Service, cooking technique, recipes, presentation, correct seasoning, ambiance, cost, everything. The chef/owner greeted us as we walked in and guided us through the menu as we were settling in. My girlfriend is a vegetarian, which is always tricky in a country still stuck on meat. However, Chef made a perfectly cooked and inspired veggie dish, especially for her off the top of his head.
To top it off, there was a hand typed, personalized note waiting for us on the table!
I’ve been to Michelin all over the world. Which is fun. But when it comes to perfect ingredients executed perfectly, I am grateful Peixão is just the next town down the coast...

Some elements of the food were full of flavour and some were a little disappointing in taste and portion size.
Service, the waitress was nice but the food delivery was poor. Starters, we didn't get at the same time, in fact some of our party had finished before the last starter arrived. The main were t quite as late but we still had to wait for all food. In fact one of our party was halfway through their main when the vegetables arrived.
The setting is nice enough.
The food itself was disappointing for the money. Crab salad didn't have enough crab and the seafood cakes were plentiful but a little doughy. The mains were better, the shrimp, chorizo and rice was lovely and the sharing seafood cataplana was very nice. Would have been good if it came with bread to sink up the flavour of the sauce. We asked for some but of course this is an...
Read moreI booked this restaurant via email and I received a warm reply. I requested a table near the window which was granted. This restaurant is in a fantastic location and it was possible to watch the sunset. The deco inside is very tasteful and up to date. Good choice of music. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The menu is the right size and plenty of choice. During my visit to the Restaurant Peixão, the Sapateira festival was going on so we decided to go for it. The food was tasty and pleasantly presented on the plate. Despite the fact we could order as many as we like we did not order more sapateira, but we requested more toasted bread to finish the dish. And unfortunately this was added on to the bill. Overall I consider that 76 euros (without desert) for 2 people was a bit...
