Another newly opened Asian cuisine restaurant has arrived in Riyadh, and we decided to give it a try to satisfy our Asian food cravings. No reservations were needed, and we barely encountered any waiting time. The restaurant is well-decorated, capturing the ambiance of a modern fusion Chinese restaurant.

We ordered the prawn dumplings, fragrant crispy half duck, spicy eggplant, Szechuan beef, steamed sea bass, and white rice.

Starting with the dumplings, they were almost on point in terms of taste, though the accompanying chili oil lacked the expected punch and depth of spices. The duck was served with six steamed flatbreads, perfect for assembling your own tacos or fajitas. The eggplant was delicious, with chopped nuts adding a unique crunchy texture. The Szechuan beef was tender and taste was just okay but the portion was awful. For 89 riyals, I expected a larger portion, comparable to other Chinese restaurants like Yunlai. The steamed fish was a tad bit disappointing too, not because of the flavors, which were quite good and on point, but because the serving was only half a fillet, rather than the whole fish as shown in the advertised picture in the menu. To make matters worse, the fillet itself was quite small for the 99 riyals price.

Overall, New Shanghai feels like a mixed bag. The food is flavorful and the restaurant offers a good starting point for venturing into Chinese or Asian cuisine, but you can definitely find better quality and...
