Stara konoba — Restaurant in City of Belgrade

For about two years, I had been visiting this place occasionally but regularly. It’s very close to my home, and I truly enjoyed the food. However, my last two visits were disappointing. From the moment I walked in, the unfriendly attitude of the waitstaff caught my attention.

I ordered tripe soup for the first time because I hadn’t had a chance to try it before, but I was told it wasn’t available (the same thing happened during my previous visit). If it’s unavailable, I believe it should be removed from the menu. Then, we ordered other dishes from the menu. Our food arrived 45 minutes after ordering, which was an excessively long wait. One of the dishes we ordered was Shopska salad. Typically, a salad like this should take about 3-5 minutes to serve; in most restaurants, it’s prepared in advance and brought out within a few minutes of ordering.

When the food finally arrived, we had to point out all the missing items on the table, one by one. The waitstaff seemed uninterested in doing their jobs. When it came time to pay the bill, I was told that card payments weren’t accepted, even though I’ve paid with a card here many times before. They forced us to pay in cash and were very pushy about tips.

The waiter is a thief, we couldn't read the menu as everything is in Cyrillic alphabet, so we trusted his suggestions. The plates arrived and he kept on coming with more and more food. The food is OK. Then the invoice came and he charged us 12060 dinars and pushed us to give him a bakshish. The invoice note didn't summarize the ordered food and drinks. He received €5 from my friend but then requested me to give him also some extra tip. He already received 3 fine cigars from us. We ordered a domestic coffee after having paid the invoice and he charged us 450 dinars for it and returned 500 on a note of 1000 dinars. I used to go here quite often in 2022 and 2023. They changed the waiter and I agree with similar reviews that the waiter is quite a piece of work. Take it from a native from Serbia, the guy's equally a thief and rude with his fellow serbs. Restaurant only has food available according to what he suggests, no point in ordering from the menu as the rule of the game is to rack your bill as high as the waiter feels at the time of day. Fellow travellers and foreigners, you won't miss much of the food at this joint, much better food is found at traditional downtown taverns like znak pitanja.
