Chong Qing Hotpot is one of my favourite food experiences I’ve had since moving to Johannesburg. The restaurant exudes a homely, unpretentious, and inviting atmosphere. One of the main reasons I keep coming back is because of the distinct feeling that you’re dining at a loved one’s home. This warmth comes from the attentive staff and the sense of family that permeates the space. Michael, his lovely partner, and his parents are always exceptionally warm and welcoming, adding a personal touch that makes every visit memorable.

There’s something deeply comforting about cooking food in a hotpot with friends, and this restaurant is absolutely perfect for that. The food is exceptional, and the dipping sauces are a highlight every time. However, if you’re not keen on hotpot, they also offer a range of other authentic Chinese dishes, all of which are incredible. The servers are always friendly and great at offering advice for those unfamiliar with Chinese cuisine, making it an approachable and enjoyable experience for everyone.

The first time I came here with my partner, we were greeted by a kind young man (I think manager) that was extremely helpful. We told him about our dietary restrictions and he did not hesitate to meet our needs. Awesome experience I thought. So I decided to go back as I really enjoyed my first experience.

The second time I went back the young man was not there but I was still optimistic. I explained to the waitress my dietary restrictions and I even showed her pictures of my last experience how things looked. And she had no idea what I what I was talking about, my partner tried to also explain in vernacular but she still had no clue. She was confused, and this resulted in so much tension as when I tried to ask the person who looked to be in charge he would bring back the same waitress. Within 1 hour we left. It was so bad this place really ruined date night!

Also, the lamb ribs are terrible. They are deep fried until they are crisp and there is no meat left. Very bad....
