Our first visit to Chinatown and Shun De was at the top of my list of restaurants to eat at in the area.
Being a Saturday, there was a dimsum buffet. I would heavily recommend the starters that are on the steamers, as these get served at perfect temperature, unlike the ones under the warming lights. I did pick up 2 options from that table and requested that they be warmed up for us, which made them better.
Another friend recommended ordering from the menu, so you can get your dimsum freshly prepared, but we were in a bit of a hurry to get home before the World Cup finals.
I was told that the prawn hargao were excellent. I loved both the steamed and the pan fried pork dim sum - but think that the pan fried dimsum were better of the 2.
The pork and the beef ribs had different flavourings (black bean / pepper) and were excellent. I did love the potato bits at the bottom, that had soaked up all the fat and flavour from the steamed ribs.
The sausage rolls were not my favourite - the Chinese sausage was lovely, but it was too much dough for me.
The salad bowl was a fantastic surprise with a seaweed salad and a cucumber salad - both had distinct flavours that complemented the dimsum beautifully.
The veg spring rolls had good flavour and were the right size for us (I don’t like those overly large spring rolls that are half way to burrito size) but reheating them (from the warming light section) made them slightly soggy. They would be fantastic when fresh.
We ordered a hot and sour soup off the menu which was an excellent choice. Enough for 2. A beautiful balance of sourness and a bit of heat. Not overly sour, as some places tend to serve.
We ended with a red bean pudding and the custard buns - both of which were an excellent way to finish the meal.
We ordered a pot of jasmine tea and a bottle of water.
We had not seen any prices, since we weren’t offered menus, and were requested to choose from the buffet.
Our total bill including service charge was 590R.
Loved the food. The Cantonese flavours were fresh and delicate. There was vinegar chilli sauce and a chilli paste sauce for the dishes that needed a bit of extra heat.
Next time, I would like to order off the menu, so everything is served fresh and hot.
Language is a bit of a challenge (especially given my prawn allergy), but every member of the staff did their...

From the moment you walk through the doors, you’re transported to a charming setting adorned with traditional Chinese décor, creating an authentic and inviting atmosphere.
Our meal was a culinary journey, featuring a variety of dishes that showcased the restaurant’s mastery of Chinese cuisine. We started with vegetable spring rolls, which were perfectly crisp and packed with flavour, and moved on to pork and prawn dumplings, both of which were a triumph—steamed to perfection and bursting with delicious fillings.
For mains, the spicy sizzling beef stood out with its bold flavours and perfectly tender meat, while the sweet and sour pork offered a beautiful balance of tangy and sweet notes. Each dish was presented beautifully and tasted even better than it looked.
The service was another highlight. The waitstaff were warm, attentive, and incredibly efficient, adding to the overall enjoyment of the meal. Despite its slightly higher price point compared to some other establishments in the area, the quality of the food and service here makes it worth every rand.

Read moreIt took so long before they even come to take our order after sitting us even tho the restaurant was empty it was unbelievable, over 30 minutes if not 40 and when they took our order they said that’s all ? because the kitchen close in 3 minutes… so yeah I guess and the food was ok, the beef ball, beef tripe and the turnip cake were good but the chicken congee was tasteless and the porc spareribs were just not good… to get the bill it was the same they just never come to the table even tho we were the only client in the restaurant since all the other one left already… they did have a cool sauce counter where you can go and get it yourself which was cool. Not the worst dim sum I’ve had but I’ve definitely had better. I don’t think it’s a bad Chinese restaurant but for dim sum maybe it’s not their forte. But over all the restaurants was clean from was i was seeing but the bathroom were simply in my top 20 worst bathroom I’ve seen so dirty I just ended...
