Schwaben Meats Butchery — Restaurant in Gauteng

I used to frequent this establishment at least 2 to 3 times per month. I moved to another town and get to Edenvale about once every second month. I always referred this place to anyone travelling to Edenvale. Some friends told me that they were disappointed with the service and most foodstuffs on the menu were not available. So I went to see for myself... it definately has deteriorated and is not what it used to be. I went just before lunch time and already most of the favourites were finished. I asked for a small eisbein, she took one, weighed it, asked if I wanted it cut and I paid for it. After receiving the cut eisbein... opening the sliced eisbein, the cut through of the bone did not match, so at least one or two pieces were removed and were not on my plate.... not nice. Still tasted delicious, and in my opinion still one of the best German "restaurants" or...

Who knew that Schwaben Edenvale has re-opened?

I popped in there a bit early while waiting for my car. Luckily they were able to help me with coffee while they were still cleaning and setting up for the morning. I sat in the corner, taking phonecalls and organising things I needed to get done. The staff kept checking up on me if I needed anything.

I started off with a Cappuccino with cream, before ordering one of their fantastic pork schnitzel and chips. Somehow I also got salad and vegetables, clearly I looked hungry. Added some mustard to it, because you can't have it without it.

Before leaving I had my second Cappuccino (don't tell my doc I've had so much caffeine lately)

Don’t know what happened, but after a gap of a few months we returned to Schwaben, and quite bluntly, it was awful! The quality of the food was inferior, the staff clearly demotivated, the service poor, and the prices higher than I remember. For example, mash potatoes were bland, the cherry/almond pie stale, the coffee lukewarm and bitter, and worst of all, in the middle of what should have been a busy lunch hour, the sausage was clearly dry and not tasty at all. And to add insult to injury, the tablecloth was dirty. It seems that customers have abandoned them in droves, and it saddens me because before lockdown we were there at least once a month.
