I made the trip all the way from Alberton today with my aunt and her son, eager to share what I once remembered as authentic Durban-style cuisine from The Cooking Divas. Sadly, the experience was nothing short of disappointing.
We ordered two quarter mutton bunnies and a broad bean roti wrap. The bunnies were inedible – the curry tasted more like a bland stew, with no vibrant color, depth, or flavor. Instead, it was overly salty, flat, and had the distinct taste of being reheated from the previous day. The meat itself carried an unpleasant “gamey” taste that made it even harder to enjoy. Out of the two bunnies, one was left behind at the table, and the other I took away but eventually gave to someone on the street because it simply wasn’t edible.
My aunt’s roti wrap was equally disappointing. The broad bean curry was salty, colorless, and completely lacked flavor – almost as if the beans had just been boiled and wrapped. She forced herself to eat half, but the lack of authenticity and freshness was obvious.
This establishment used to pride itself on authentic Durban-style cooking that was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. What we experienced today was the exact opposite – no consistency, no vibrancy, and certainly no authenticity. As someone in the food industry myself, I was shocked at the decline in quality.
If The Cooking Divas hopes to keep their customers, they seriously need to relook at their recipes, preparation methods, and above all, customer satisfaction. Food should never leave diners feeling this disappointed, especially when people go out of their way to...
Read moreA little gem nestled in the heart of Edenvale. Walking into the little restaurant, one is reminded of walking into a friends house when their mother was cooking. 🥘
The decor is quite reminiscent of your friend's house as well - feels like you are going to look over and see the uncles playing Thunee ♦️ with their Mainstay 🥃and bites next to them.
The food is great - arguably the best bunny that I have had in Joburg so far. I was transported back to my mom's kitchen when that redolent aroma from my lamb bunny🍞 tickled my nostrils.
The gravy soaked the bread till the last centimeter. The center was filled to the top with succulent lamb 🍖, with the occasional piece of soft potato interspersed between them. It was delicious to the last piece.
My wife had the kebab chutney with roti. And even though she is very fussy, she wiped the bowl with the last piece of the roti. The kebabs were spicy, with lots of greens and nicely browned on the outside. The chutney was chilli with just the right amount of tartness. 👌
To round up the trifecta of homely goodness, the owners treat you like family. Visiting the Cooking Divas is like walking into your home🏡 back in Durban and having a good home cooked...
Read moreBeen here multiple times. Food is always good. Average waiting time for already prepared food took 30min although Google mentions no waiting period. Veg briyani and butter beans always tasty with salad. Ordered 4 individually wrapped butter beans and roti rolls, well packaged for transport but roti was breakable with cold curry. We enjoyed the food but notes above are for Management to consider remedying certain aspects for return patrons. Also believe that there needs to be a dedicated staff member in front to assist with customer issues. Witnessed a gent walking out without service and another whose order was mixed up leaving with half his request. Hope this assists as we would love returning and enjoying the...
