A Hidden Culinary Gem in Hoekwil — Worthy of the World Stage
As someone who travels extensively—spending eight months of the year between Europe and America—and works as a chef on private a private yacht, I rarely come across a place that so effortlessly combines culinary excellence, warm service, and a sense of place quite like Merchant and Maiden in Hoekwil.
We began our luncheon with the falafel and hummus side plate, which was nothing short of sublime. The falafel was perfectly crisp on the outside, delicately spiced, and airy within—paired with a creamy, silky hummus that struck the ideal balance between nutty and tangy. A simple dish elevated with care and precision.
For mains, the 300g sirloin steak was a standout—exceptionally tender, grilled to a flawless medium-rare, and bursting with natural juices. Each bite was a testament to quality sourcing and mastery at the grill. The Alfredo fettuccine followed with equal grace: rich, velvety, and aromatic, layered with depth and topped with a generous scattering of fresh rocket that added vibrant bite. The thoughtful touch of a complimentary plate of fresh garlic, chili, and parmesan alongside allowed us to tailor each forkful to our liking—a gesture rarely found outside of fine trattorias in Italy.
The wine and drinks list is impressively curated, showcasing both local and international selections, all of which pair beautifully with the menu.
Our server, Tristan, was an absolute delight—genuinely warm, attentive without hovering. His presence added to the already charming atmosphere along with the music. They even gave us their Spotify Playlist account.
In all honesty, Merchant and Maiden could easily hold its own against celebrated establishments in Miami, St. Tropez, or Sardinia. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why local dining matters—unpretentious, unforgettable, and brimming with soul.
Whether you're a local or a globe-trotter, this is a culinary stop...
Read moreWe expected much more given the high ratings. However, we were deeply disappointed. We arrived at around 12:30 today and the last drink was served around 13:40. As we got up to cancel our t orders they started bringing our cheese cake slices one by one (portion sizes were not the same so my sister felt quite left out having a smaller piece despite being 9months pregnant). The waiter kept apologizing athe slow service and kept stating they’re short of staff. However, there were 4 waiters and approx 25 customers in total (I just did a headcount as Im typing this review) so the waiter to table ratio works out as 6 customers per waiter which is quite lenient for a café. We actually had an inside joke running putting a waiver on how much more times the waiter will apologize for the slow service. I really feel for the waiters because you could see how awful they feel for apologizing. Im not a difficult person and we tried to help out where we could just to alleviate the pressure, but at some stage we just gave up as it became the norm. Im sure we would’ve have a great experience out of busy season, but they’re definitely not geared for peak/busy season. Would I visit them again? Yes, the cheesecakes are out of this world, however, my next visit would definitely be outside...
