This restaurant is quite well known as a result of the fact that it literally looks like a windmill and it is located right next door to a farmers market. It also specializes in Dutch cuisine. I tried the double portion of Krokketen (see picture). This cost about R89 a serving. We were a party of four with two diners ordering the double beef and cheese savory pancakes (at about R98 a serving) and the fourth diner ordering the rump steak with additional pepper sauce meal which cost about R160. The diners eating the savory pancakes enjoyed them although by South African standards, the pancakes were small in size. The rump steak was done to order but the presentation was slap dash and the steak itself had a thick piece of fat that had not been rendered. The pepper sauce was extremely mild. All in all, more attention to detail would have improve the taste and the experience-especially as it is one of the more expensive meals on the menu. I would not recommend the krokketen. Having had the fortune of tasting the real thing in Amsterdam, this comes no where close to the real thing. The inside was a mushy mixture if about 60 percent potatoes and about 40 percent mushy mince. Nothing to write home about. Service was mediocre with our waitress demonstrating the same haste and lack of attention to detail that the steak meal spoke of. This speaks volumes if you take into account that the restaurant was not busy/full when we were there. Being first time visitors, I asked the waiter what she would recommend. I.mentioned having tasted Dutch food in Amsterdam. Her response was that she did not personally like to try "new" foods and could therefore not advise as to the "dutch" items on the menu. And this is a restaurant that specializes in Dutch cuisine!! The worst however was the fact that we then made use of the "in house" bathroom at the end of the meal and discovered that the ladies bathroom did not have actual soap in the bathroom! Instead, there was this watered down hand sanitizer type of offering. The thought of the servers and /or kitchen staff handling food after "washing" their hands with only this stuff, is just gross!! This needs to seriously and immediately be attended to!! All in all, this looks like it has been a good restaurant to go to however over time, it has come to rely more on its reputation than actual service and quality of experience, which is just sad. A major draw card for this restaurant must be the fact that it is located immediately next to a great farmers' market. The prices and range of produce is fantastic and well...
Read moreWell this was an utter disappointment.
On arrival there was no one to greet us, not a great start. Eventually we flagged down a waiter, that instructed us to " go speak to that man, he will seat you".
We spoke to this person and asked for a table for 2, in the shade. He did not walk us to our table, he merely pointed in a tables direction. I asked him are there any other tables available because it seems the table would get alot of sun shortly, he assured me that the table stays in the shade. Fair enough we sat down. Our waitress then arrives. I still have no clue what her name was because se never spoke a word, took our drink orders and left. Came back with what was probably the most revolting bubblegum milkshake I have ever had. And that at R33.00.
Then on to the waffles. The menu is an absolute disgrace. If you want to be a wafflehouse, atleast use something other than apples. If you had an ounce of passion in you, it would've been visible on the menu.
We ordered 2 sweet waffles. One cheesecake and one amarula. The amarula was nothing other than wipped cream with added amarula. The cheesecake waffle was anything but golden brown, but more towards burnt.
All in all a horrible experiences.
On a positive note though. Besides our waitress who had about as much personality as a brick. And the head waiter that shouts at the other staff in front of all your guests, his main priority making sure that his hair looks good, you have a waitress by the name of Leticia.
She was the only one that greeted us in a very friendly manner. She was definitely the star of the day!!
Hats off too you Leticia. Please find somewhere else to work as you have much more potential that the poor excuse of a...
Read moreWent there for breakfast with my parents. The coffee was really good. I am personally not someone who likes a traditional eggs and toast breakfast, but the menu didn’t have much else to offer before 11am. 2 of our 3 orders had to be changed due to stock issues. If you only have 5 options, at least have them in stock. For the price paid here, one would want for it to feel less like a fast food experience. We felt very rushed, we were pushed to order food as soon as we sat down, even though there were at least still a dozen tables open. The food came extremely quickly, which is something most would praise, but after driving for a relaxing breakfast experience, we would have liked to finish our coffee first before being served our food. Also, they stood at the side of the table waiting for me to finish my food so they could take the plate. I don’t recommend this place if you’re driving more than 40 minutes to get there, because you will spend more time driving to get there, than you will have to enjoy your breakfast. Also, I advise you to ask them before you even order coffee what they have in stock. We were told they didn’t have what we wanted after we had ordered coffee. Had we known earlier, we would have at least had the option to leave.
I don’t think I...
