The Elephant and Co is not merely a place of indulgence. This is a sanctum, a place free from unnecessary intrusions, yet a venue where KZN jungle’s pulse beats strong and clear in the language of design. A visit to this restaurant is an invitation to step beyond the certainties of rugby and cricket scores and into the mysteries of nature, the fine craft of interior design.

For those who dare to leave the beaten N3, who can resist the temptation of a Kwagga Burger in Hayfields, who believe that navigating the Athlone circle will add a frisson of excitement to one’s journey - this is a fine destination.

The floors of the Elephant and Co are striped like the very zebra who once galloped across the wild and sweeping plains and valleys of KZN, leading you with each step deeper into the heart of an untamed world that the Elephant and Co has so skillfully conjured.

The menu too, echoes this park-land theme, bearing offerings of sustenance and delight as if from lands forgotten, yet ever-present in the colonial soul. Therein lies a spirit that calls to the wanderer, the explorer, and the dreamer, reminding them that the wilds remain, if only one has the will to seek them.

This Elephant and Co is more than a palace of visual and culinary pleasures. Its a reminder that the Last Outpost of Pietermaritzburg is not lost. It’s just shifted its perch up the hill, en...

A Night to Remember – Perfect Birthday Dinner for My Mom We recently celebrated my mom’s 49th birthday at Elephant & Co, and I can confidently say it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed and made to feel incredibly special — the service was impeccable from start to finish. The staff went above and beyond to make the evening memorable. They even surprised my mom with a beautifully plated dessert and a birthday wish that truly made her smile. Every interaction felt genuine, kind, and personal. The food? Absolutely outstanding. Every dish was perfectly prepared, full of flavor, and beautifully presented. You can tell the kitchen takes real pride in what they serve — everything exceeded our expectations. It’s rare to find a place where every single plate is a hit, but this was one of those rare gems. The atmosphere added the perfect touch — cozy yet elegant, with just the right music and lighting to make the evening feel both relaxed and special. It was the perfect setting for a celebration, and we left feeling full, happy, and grateful. Thank you to the entire team at Elephant & Co for making my mom’s birthday so memorable. We’ll definitely be back — not just for special occasions, but any time we want to enjoy a truly...

Situated at Athlone Circle, Elephant & Co is a must for anyone seeking aesthetically pleasing interior design for Instagram. With almost every angle of the restaurant looking amazing from the colour coordination to the choice of decor, it definitely lives up to the hype of being a coveted restaurant for IG Influencers. The staff complement were very professional, friendly and offered great insight to the menu. Elephant & Co boasts a fabulous drinks menu with something for everyone. We started our evening with Mimosas and Chicken Bao Buns which were absolutely delicious. We also ordered a Hubbly which we sat outside the restaurant and enjoyed. The Hubbly was well made, flavourful and lasted longer than expected. We finished our dinner with the Spicy Chicken pasta with penne. The pasta was absolutely delicious and I would definitely recommend checking it out. My only criticism is that the tables are a but small if you are ordering many dishes and that the menu isn't as versatile as other places especially if you do not eat beef and/or pork. That being said, our waitress was very accommodating and allowed us to remove the bacon from the pasta. All in all, we had a wonderful time and will definitely return to try out some other menu items. Highly...

Nestled in the heart of Athlone, Pietermaritzburg, Elephant & Co delivers a contemporary dining experience that’s as visually appealing as it is flavourful. The restaurant’s chic, modern interior pairs perfectly with its vibrant, globally inspired menu making it a go to spot for both casual lunches and special occasions. On our visit, we sampled three standout dishes that showcased the kitchen's skill and creativity. The Seared Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl was a refreshing yet satisfying start beautifully balanced with just the right amount of heat and texture. The Sushi Prawn Crunch Roll was expertly prepared, with crisp tempura and a silky prawn filling that made each bite a delight. For something heartier, the Thai Red Coconut Prawn Curry impressed with its bold, fragrant flavours and creamy coconut base a warm, comforting dish perfect for any time of day. Service was attentive and friendly throughout, and the drinks menu added an extra layer of indulgence, from craft cocktails to a thoughtful wine selection. Whether you're a sushi lover, a fan of fusion cuisine, or just looking for a stylish spot to unwind, Elephant & Co more than delivers. It’s a must visit that continues to raise the bar for dining in Pietermaritzburg.
