As we drive past Sungsimdang, the sight of a long line stretching outside immediately caught our attention. Wondering what made this bakery so special, we later discovered that Sungsimdang is the cultural pride of Daejeon. On most days, the wait time can be anywhere from two to three hours, yet people patiently line up, eager to get a taste of their famous baked goods. Wanting to avoid the long outdoor wait, we visited on a weekday when there was no line outside. However, once inside, we found another queue winding through the bakery. Fortunately, their efficient system made the wait surprisingly short.

Founded in 1956 as a small steamed bun shop near Daejeon Station, Sungsimdang has since evolved into one of Korea’s most iconic bakeries, cherished by both locals and visitors. Over the years, it has become a household name, representing Daejeon’s rich culinary heritage and setting a high standard in the Korean bakery industry. But Sungsimdang is more than just a bakery. Rooted in Catholic values, the company is committed to serving the community and fostering a culture of generosity and care. Their philosophy extends beyond baking—they aim to create “delicious bread, extraordinary bread, and life-giving bread,” using their craft to bring people together through the love of food.

It’s incredible to think that this single bakery now employs over 1,100 people, yet remains exclusive to Daejeon. If you want to experience their legendary pastries, you’ll have to visit the city, as they haven’t expanded beyond it. We couldn’t resist and picked up nearly 20 different pastries and sandwiches—and every single one was absolutely delicious. Even more impressive? The prices were incredibly reasonable for such high-quality baked goods. If you ever find yourself in Daejeon, Sungsimdang is...

There was a line, and I asked them to pick out the top sellers. None of them, I repeat…none of them were really special. People eat here for nostalgic reasons, OR they think bc it’s famous it’s good. (Koreans do that)

There are so many better bakeries all over Seoul and Paju that make pastries that are exceptionally better. If you’re a foreigner, don’t fall into the hype. I have some friends from this area, and they warned me that it’s just average. The prices are still lower than average, but I’d rather pay more and eat something great when it comes to pastries. There aren’t a lot of bakeries here, but almost every hole in the wall in Paju and Goyang...

My husband and I visited here early in the morning; they were already sold out of their famous chocolate bread…. (Our fault tho) We still got an assortment of different breads and sandwiches - their Vietnamese style sandwich was my favorite. And I was so excited to try their earl grey jam from the bakery!!! That was… until I opened the jam (at home) and it had mold! I reached out for a refund or a replace several times since it was 9,000 for a small jar of jam. But they left me on read again and again. I don’t think we’ll go back. This made me wonder how long their stuff sits out before it’s purchased….
