Hoon Nam Hwoetjip Hamdoek Restaurant — Restaurant in Jeju

We came at 7.50pm on a weekday and was told there was a 30 min wait which wasn’t a problem as we went for a quick wander and was happy to come back later.

You choose your sashimi downstairs and pay before going upstairs. Today, the special was mackerel, salmon, sea bream and hairtail fish. As there were only two of us, we ordered a small assorted sashimi platter for 35,000 won, a small prawn sashimi and a sea squirt which I’ve never tried before.

We headed upstairs and was given a table straight away. The ordering was via a tablet but no English available. From what I could make out, there were various rice, soup and a simple ramen dish available. We ordered a serving of the noodles in broth.

The sashimi came shortly and I have to say I was disappointed at the lack of taste in all the sashimi. The salmon was sliced rather thinly and the other white fish were quite bland. The shrimp sashimi was a tad sweet and tasted fresh and the sea squirt tasted like the sea but indeed was worth trying and interesting.

The side dishes served were probably more like bar food, one plate of soggy seaweed, another of raw onion and a third of soggy crisps. Then a super small dish of macaroni and kimchi not enough to feed a small child.

Overall, experience was only good as the staff taking our sashimi order downstairs was quite nice and friendly! Other than that, food is pretty average! I’m sure the view is also worth coming for in the daytime if you get a window...

There is a lot of waiting involved, with a queue to go in, and at least 20-30 mins before being served after ordering, with each dish coming out slowly like a Chinese banquet.
