I had dinner at Voro during my recent honeymoon to Spain. Billed as the only two Michelin star restaurant on Mallorca, this felt like a "must go" during the week spent on the island. While the food was fine, the expectation of a restaurant of this caliber encompasses so much more than just the actual cuisine itself, and it was in some of the other aspects of a culinary experience that Voro fell flat.
Entering Voro felt like being in an episode of Black Mirror, with couples situated in each of the 4 corners of the room, at comically oversized tables that could easily fit 6-8 people. Diners are sat such that they are facing each of the other three couples, leading one to feel like they are at some bizzaro honeymoon factory, where each other couple is doing the exact same thing they are. Don't come here expecting any kind of intimate experience.
My concerns felt validated by our first interaction with the sommolier. Upon seating, he asked if we would care for any “sparkling wine” to start our meal. The phrase caused my ears to perk up, as almost every other restaurant simply offered local Cava. Sure, let’s see where this goes. The sommelier proceeded to say “let’s stay in France” (?!?!?) and I tuned out while he waxed poetic about some fancy reserve I had no interest in trying. I asked if they had any Cava, and after another attempted upsell, I finally was able to order what seemed like a reasonable glass of cava. When a wine menu was later brought out, I realized the first champagnes offered to us were $30/$40 per glass (and we had fortunately ordered a more palatable $15 glass).
Maybe this seems like a silly anecdote, that I should know what I was getting into at a fine dining establishment. And I’m sure some people gladly order the reserve champagne and if you’re looking to ball out, by all means be my guest. But in two weeks of eating out in Spain, this was the only time I’ve felt such a predatory dining experience. It was hard to overcome that initial experience, as I felt like staff viewed us as simply dollars to spend. In no other meal I had on my trip did I feel that way. This was further reinforced when later in the meal, after we twice declined another bottle of still water, they simply brought out another one and poured it anyway. Whatever. Had I not prepaid the $50 per person, I would have left after the initial encounter.
The actual food itself was adequate if underwhelming. 16 “courses” is a bit of a stretch considering the first 6 “courses” are one bite each, brought out in waves of 3. This place thinks they’re important, and want you to feel as such. Meh. I wouldn’t put this in the top 5 meals I had during...
Read moreWe came here for dinner on our honeymoon. Throughout the trip we ate at both Michelin star restaurants and local eateries. After being delighted by almost everywhere we went in Mallorca, it is hard to understand how this place ended up with two Michelin stars.
While Mallorca is ripe with beautiful landscapes and architectural moments, Voro has decided to situate itself in a rather unremarkable space that evokes a faux Tuscan interior decor reminiscent of 2003.
On the evening we visited, they sat four couples at comically large round tables - facing other couples. This arrangement forces you to avoid the glances of the other diners you are facing. It also takes away from the impressive presentation of food as you see the waiters walk toward you with every course. I'm preferable to the approach from behind that gives the feeling that dishes are floating on and off the table.
While the waitstaff was kind and gracious, everything felt forced. At one point, we remarked at how much we loved the wine glasses and our waiter proceeded to tell us how much they cost. It was off-putting but perfectly sums up our entire experiences as it feels like everything about Voro saying “See, isn’t this nice?”
And while everything was technically nice, it just ends up feeling stuffy. The food was good, but...
Read moreI've been waiting for this reservation for the last 5/6 months. From the moment I stepped into VORO, I knew I was in for something special.
The atmosphere is elegant yet inviting, setting the perfect stage for what would become the most memorable dining experience of my life.
Each dish that arrived at my table was not only beautifully presented, but also a reflection of deep thought, creativity, and respect for the ingredients - every detail presented was so well thought and fascinating. You can easily understand that every texture, flavour, plating, and so on, has been carefully considered and perfected.
To elevate the evening even further, the team behind the experience was exceptional. From the warm welcome to the attentive yet unobtrusive service, every interaction felt genuine and heartfelt. They don’t just serve you; they make you feel at home while guiding you through a culinary journey.
Dining at VORO is not simply about eating, it's a full experience, that makes you feel inspired and deeply moved by what gastronomy can achieve when passion meets perfection.
My final saying is: All the other Michelin stars be aware, because this one is easily on it's way for the third *.
Many thanks, looking forward in meeting...
