A mixture.
A mixture of American and Spanish cultures and food here.
The experience here is thus somewhat mixed. 😁
But I must say: don't be put off by the doughnuts! The Spanish side of things does very well.
So on the one hand you get doughnuts, mainly with gooey fillings, all covered in sickly frosting. You might as well be in Chicago. 😥
Is this what the Anglo-Saxon culture has done for Spain?
But then on the other hand, they have some nice tapas.
And above all, they are very welcoming to large groups - I have been here several times in a party of 20+ and they don't blink an eyelid.
When we had a big party for a set menu lunch recently, the food was just wonderful!
We had a lovely mixture of things for first course - charcuterie, cheese, croquetas, tomato salad, crispy fried aubergines. The main course was either tuna with prawn sauce or steak with Pedro Ximenez - both served with fried peppers and dauphinoise potatoes. Really tender and really tasty - everyone agreed that.
So go for the Spanish food, unless you are a teenager with a hankering...
Read moreIf you have never been to Doopies before and you're in a rush then this is not your place. Keep walking. Go somewhere else. Doopies is your old school, old fashioned, traditional style cafe you spend the afternoon at. It's not the type of place you pop in and out of in a rush. The regular clientele are a family, everyone knows everyone, everyone greets everyone. Everyone is patient with everyone. Is your coffee always served to you without being a bit spilled? No. Are there always paper towels in the restroom? No. Are the tables sometimes sticky? Yes. But the coffee is pretty good for Estepona and so is the food and it's absolutely local prices. And once they know you, you're family. Locals from the cafe will greet you at the supermarket and on the sidewalk. You'll be made to feel as part of the community. For this recent foreign transplant it's been my haven. Everyday people. Everyday life. Everyday prices. But don't be in a rush. If you're in a rush, you'll only leave angry so it's...
