Mare Nostrum — Restaurant in Gualchos

Update... After revisiting this place, I now give 5 stars. And it all has to do with I already expected it to be. I went back for some dishes from the normal menu and they were DELICIOUS. The clams in a thick and heavy sauce... yummy! And then baby eels, never had this before but I love it! It resembles a dish I know from New Zealand, where they use white bait. This was perhaps a bit too oily, but okay. Lovely cheesecake for dessert and a nice rum to finish it off. Yeah, this place, and its excellent staff, really deserves 5 stars.

Good, fresh food for a nice price... and excellent service. I came in on a very quiet evening for a menu of the day. Btw, I love the fact that in this part of the country you still get a tapa with every drink you order. I hope this never changes... it really starts the evening off well. I had mussels to start and grilled sea bass for main. The mussels were great, but the main was not. The few veggies seemed to be old and were almost mushy, three mini potatoes, and a heavily overcooked fish. That's why I give 4 and not 5 stars, even knowing the menu is only €16 for three courses. But... all in all, I will be back and try some dishes a la carte that time. I have a suspicion they will be much better, especially if it's a bit more busy. So, if my next experience is better, I will certainly go to a 5. The staff deserves 5...

Fuimos al medio día, algo tarde, preguntamos si se podía comer ya que aún tenía varias mesas en la terraza sirviendo, a lo cual nos dijo que preguntaría en cocina, volviendo el encargado y diciendo que sí, que aunque no había de todo lo del menú, se podría hacer un apaño. Sin habernos sentado aún, le pedimos un plato del menú para al menos comer un plato y no generar muchas molestias. Nos sentamos, ya habiéndole dicho al responsable lo que queriamos, regresa y nos ofrece una alternativa a lo que habíamos pedido, a lo que le confirmamos que como el viera mejor, que le habiamos dicho eso del menú pero que si quería adaptarlo porque le viniese mejor no había inconveniente. Comimos bien, buen servicio, y la comida muy buena. A la hora de ir a pagar nos viene con la cuenta, y sale a mas de 25€ por cabeza, aun habiendo pedido el menú y habiendo aceptado los cambios que el propio encargado propuso a su conveniencia. Cuando pedimos explicaciones ya que nos parecía excesivo a lo que habiamos comido, y 10€ más caro que el propio menú (comimos sólo un plato cada uno), a lo que el responsable nos responde que “que queréis? Habéis venido tarde y os he dado de comer”, se le replica que hemos pedido de menú y el lo ha adaptado a su conveniencia y nos ha cobrado de carta, a lo que nos contesta que “habéis aceptado porque habéis querido”.

Todo lo bien que comimos, lo estropeó en un momento, tanto trabajo le suponía informar de las cosas previamente? Además de la actitud irrespetuosa por parte del responsable.

Es una lástima con lo mal que se ha pasado en éste tiempo atrás en la hostelería que se recurran a los topicazos de “afilar el sable por estar en zona de playa”.

Si no cuidas a los clientes, y aún más importante, si los engañas..negocios con responsables así, con esa falta de profesionalidad, no merecen ninguna...

My son is a very picky eater, and we often struggle to get him to eat outside his regular meals. However, he devoured the fried fish dish served here. I has squid, octopus and eel larvae, those were his favorites. I'm not going to lie, we snuck some of his fish too. We enjoyed the cod, sardines, herrings and...it's quite a complete dish, its what I'm saying. The black tomato and avocado salad was terrific too.

However, the thing that really crowned the experience was the service. Attentive, and with a great sense of humor....
