I'm usually one to try lots of different restaurants rather than be a creature of habit, but I found myself coming back here on 3 separate occasions for lunch or dinner during my short holiday in Malgrat De Mar. Spanish food can either be fresh, delicious and amazing or oily, heavy and unrefined. Luckily, Bei Pepe fits into the former category. -The Service- The owner and waiting staff are so complimentary and kind, knowing our faces by the end of the week and accommodating to my fussy four-year-old godson, by omitting certain ingredients and providing cut-price half portions to suit him. Though my friend (who doesn't speak Spanish) found it difficult to communicate with the waiting staff, I breezed through with my not-bad Spanish, so I'm not sure if non-native speakers might struggle here. However, it shouldn't be a problem as they have menus in both languages. You have to get up and pay at the cashier, which is actually much more convenient in my opinion, and they are happy to split between cards/cash. We noticed on the first visit that we had been charged for a full-price pasta meal for the little one, which was quickly rectified by the apologetic owner and cashier, and despite paying by card she refunded us in cash immediately.
-The Food- Delicious and huge portions. In fact, whenever we sat down for a late lunch, we didnt feel hungry for the rest of the day. Yes, this place is a little pricey in comparison to some of the other places, especially the fish, but the ingredients are fresh and the flavours are spot on, and if you eat a late enough lunch, you probably wont have to fork out for dinner, so it works out in the end. My godson and his mum order the Spaghetti Carbonara (highly recommended, as all the pasta is made fresh to order) 3x, and I felt I too had to order it once. On the first night I had the monkfish, which was a hearty portion and deliciously presented. Pricey, compared to the very reasonable, large pasta options. On the second day I ordered the meat paella, which I perhaps wouldn't have again as it lacked a little seasoning. The bread for the table was so soft and delicious that we always ordered extra, and I lathered it with the olive oil and balsamic provided. The Ribera red wine was also beautiful and silky smooth, and I couldn't help enjoy a glass whether it was lunch or dinner.
-The Ambiance- One of the few good restaurants that remains open throughout those pesky siesta times. We arrived as late as 10:30pm on the first night, and 3pm for lunch on the last, and it wasn't a problem. There's a lovely outside area to dine al fresco, or a spacious inside dining area with families and couples enjoying the delicious food. The decor is simple but tasteful. Despite being a popular restaurant, we never had to wait for a table.
I've been dreaming of that...

Read moreHad spaghetti with sea food. For ~16 eur you get regular spaghetti from the shop with 8 mussels, 1 (!!!) clam, and 5-6 small shrimps, clearly right out of freezed pack. My wife had salmon which was also below average.
The place is packed and if you are "lucky" to get an inside place, be prepared for kids running around and screaming and toddlers crying - pretty much all the pieces for a nice romantic dinner.
Oh, and then you are asked to pay not at your table but to go and see a cashier, who doesn't speak any English and it's an additional challenge just to make him understand which table you were sitting at.
That was our second visit to the place, few days ago I had grilled mussels. Half was either empty or so tiny you can't eat them. Service is indeed...
