I had an unpleasant experience in La Cafeteria at Montserrat (the one in the photos) yesterday. Would give 0 stars if possible, and this would not only be based on their extremely low quality of food. I won't even touch on this (there are many other reviews here describing how bad the food is). My experience was worse than just eating overpriced subpar food. I came to this place for lunch before exploring the Monastery area, and bought the pasta of the day and a bottle of water. After eating my lunch, I was walking in the store next door while sipping my bottle of water when a local guard came asking me to follow him because he needed to question me. Felt a bit weird but I walked outside with him. I asked many times what was going on and he answered that he would not question me in public. He took me to some sort of warehouse near the store and museum (at this time a second guard joined). The senior guard then asked me if I had stolen that bottle of water I was drinking. Yep, I am not joking. Someone from the cafeteria called the local guards on me saying that I grabbed the bottle of water and walked out without paying. I wish I could understand the reasons for them to believe that I needed to steal a BOTTLE OF WATER, but I can't. No explanations were given. After showing my credit card charges for the lunch and water that I had just bought, they let me go, but not a full apology. This never happened to me in any other places, in any other countries. While the guard and cashier ladies checked my credit card charges, one of the ladies started to get defensive instead of apologizing. The other lady only offered a very shy and kind of half apology. Wish I had read all the bad and negative reviews here before eating in this cafeteria. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of places to eat around the Monastery, and this cafeteria is definitely a tourist trap. In the future, I will either eat before going up to the Monastery area or will bring my own...

Rather hasty response by the cashier lady, considering it was first thing in the morning . Well, the coffee was Ok, the juice wasn't "natural" as she said, but at least the pastry and small sandwich were fresh. Sure beat the stale bread bun from the night before at the Hotel Cisneros. Rather abrupt service. Could not imagine when the tourist begin to flood in what this place would be, as it took several minutes to get to my order after just a few coffees in front of me. Wonder if the monks know how things are run, or if they have any say. Such a pity for...
Read moreFirstly I can't believe the spanish government allows this filthy dump of a "cafeteria" to be open in such a beautiful place next to this incredible monastery. We arrived in the afternoon and quickly realised this was our only option for food. The place looked pretty big and had a long buffet style counter however there was nothing on it. Our only choices for food were a couple sweaty sandwiches, crisps and old fruit. I opted for an ice cream from across the street and my vegan girlfriend had to make do with a sad peach and banana. Hanger luckily averted only by her excitement at finding...
